Powell: Millwall setting example for rest of Championship

CHARLTON boss Chris Powell believes Millwall have "shown the way for a lot of teams in the Championship" with their recent 12-game unbeaten run.

The Lions go into the South London derby against the Addicks on Saturday as the form side in the division and Powell admits he is preparing his players for one of their toughest tests of the season.

"It's a game that is high on the list of priorities for both sets of fans," he said in his pre-match press conference. "It's why you love football so much – when these games come along.

"I have said to the players that have never played at The Den in the atmosphere there that they're going to have to handle it mentally and physically.

"It's a chance for us to stop their run of form – they're in a decent place, but so are we. It has all the makings of a thunderous game."

Despite the headline-grabbing form of West Brom loanee Chris Wood, Powell believes Millwall's impressive run has been built upon a strong team ethic.

"When you have a stable group of players, and a manager with a way of doings things and his own philosophy, it helps everyone at a club," he said.

"Eventually you strive and you get to where you want to go. Even though they had a sticky start, they've got going now.

"They've been very consistent with their results and they've shown the way for a lot of teams in the Championship.

"They are playing as a team at the moment, a real solid unit. Everybody will be talking about Wood because he's made a big impact since coming in on loan.

"His partnership with Keogh has been very good. They're quite no-nonsense in their approach but they've got some decent players and they play to their strengths.

"One of their strengths is playing at their home ground in front of their fans. It's up to us to combat that and make sure we play as a team and not individuals."
