GIANFRANCO Zola heaped praise on Liam Trotter after the Millwall midfielder's "excellent" performance against Watford.

Trotter, who has scored six goals for the Lions so far this season, is reportedly a January transfer target for both Southampton and Fulham – and Zola is not surprised.

Speaking after his side's 0-0 draw against Millwall, the former Chelsea star claimed the 24-year-old was the reason the Hornets failed to win the game.

"They were in control of the midfield, especially in the first-half," he said." Normally we don't allow the opposition to do that. They took control of the midfield – especially Trotter, who was excellent.

"I'm not surprised [by the reports]. Today he played with quality and quantity. We couldn't take control of the midfield or play the football we wanted and it was mainly because of him. I can only praise his performance.

"It wasn't our best game in terms of quality, especially in the first-half. We tried to increase the tempo in the second-half. Millwall defended very well and made it difficult for us.

"They haven't lost in their last eight games so that tells you a lot about their solidity. We had some chances and we could have won it. But maybe a draw is a fair result."
