ETIEN Velikonja scored a hat-trick as Millwall's U21s were beaten 4-0 by their Cardiff City counterparts in the Welsh capital.
The Bluebirds line-up featured no less than ten players who have played for the first team this season and their experience proved to be the difference in a keenly contested Development League 2 fixture.
Millwall had a chance to take the lead after just two minutes when Aiden O'Brien pounced on Declan John's weak backpass, but the striker blazed his shot well over from the edge of the area.
The visitors were making the early running and O'Brien glanced Conor Wilkinson's near-post cross narrowly wide cross in the 13th minute before Jack Sammoutis' shot was parried onto the crossbar by keeper Joe Lewis moments later.
But the Bluebirds slowly got into their stride and went onto dominate the remainder of the first period, creating a host of chances before opening the scoring.
First, Velikonja curled over from the edge of the area in the 19th minute, before Steve Mildenhall parried Joe Ralls' shot behind for a corner.
Winger Craig Conway then drilled inches over from the edge of the box and Nathaniel Jarvis inexplicably fired wide of an open goal after a mix-up between De Havilland and Mildenhall as the home side built up a head of steam.
And Velikonja finally broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time when he drilled low and hard across Mildenhall and into the far corner.
Cardiff began the second period as they had finished the first and Conway shot wide at the end of a mazy run before Velikonja fired a close-range shot straight at Mildenhall.
On a rare foray forward, Lions midfielder Dammi Shitta saw his goal-bound effort deflected wide but Velikonja headed in his second goal in the 64th minute.
The visitors looked to respond immediately and Dylan Richard went close to pulling a goal back when his vicious drive was parried away by Lewis.
But Jarvis blasted into the roof of the net to put the result beyond doubt and Velikonja added a third ten minutes from time to complete a perfect hat-trick.
