Independent newspaper issues apology to Millwall fans

THE deputy managing editor of The Independent has apologised after a columnist described Millwall fans as "animals" in an article about racism.

But NewsAtDen has been told that the Press Complaints Commission will be investigating whether the comment, made by Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, was in breach of the Editors’ Code of Practice.

The PCC received 15 complaints and says it is assessing whether the article contravened its regulations regarding accuracy.

Will Gore, deputy managing editor at the paper, said: "We accept, of course, that not all Millwall fans are 'animals' or have racist views.

"It was not Yasmin's intention to suggest otherwise but I’m obviously sorry that the piece gave the impression that all – or indeed a majority – of the club’s fans were encompassed by her description.

"We have published responses to the piece in our letters' page today, including from Millwall’s chief executive Andy Ambler. I understand that Yasmin will also return to the matter next Monday.

"Please accept my apologies for the offence you have been caused."

As usual another lazy journalist dips into the stereotyping bag,and pulls out a king sized turd of an article, sweeping generalization of the highest order again!! shouldn't be surprised people.
It's also typical to glibly apologise after the event knowing full well that enough damage will have been done.......................... pathetic!!!!
