Millwall hitman hoping award curse strikes Palace boss

MILLWALL striker Darius Henderson is hoping that the infamous manager of the month curse will strike Crystal Palace boss Dougie Freedman.

Freedman collected the gong last week after the Eagles picked up four wins and a draw in September – but the title is somewhat of a poisoned chalice.

The popular suspicion is that managers of the month tend to do less well in the weeks after their award, and Henderson hopes that will be the case in the South London derby on Saturday.

"It's good [for us]," he told Lions Live. "I wanted him to be named manager of the month because I don't think many pick up a win after getting that award.

"Last year we played Cardiff after Malkay Mackay won it and, for whatever reason, I didn't think they'd win that game either. We got a good point away from home that time."

But Henderson, who has scored four goals in his last three matches, is not counting on a supernatural intervention and says the players are fully aware that there is "a little bit more" riding on a derby match.

"The lads are definitely up for it," he said. "Those that have played in this derby before all say it's not one to miss.

"It's going to be a high-tempo game and, if selected, I'll cherish the opportunity to do well in it.

"The gaffer knows how important it is to the club and the fans especially. There's a little bit more riding on this game.

"We're all aware of the importance and we all know the fans want us to get the result. With our support we can go there and do well. We need to pick up more wins and we're well aware of that.

"We need to find more consistency in our performances to enable us to get back-to-back wins. On a personal level I've been delighted with my start to the season, but it's all about picking up points."
