“ONE hell of a move” is how Tom King described David Martin’s switch to West Ham – and he understood his former rival’s decision to join Millwall’s bitter rivals.
King revealed he spoke to Martin after the end of last season, with family and location key factors in the former Lions No. 1’s choice.
“I’m quite lucky, I’m moving to Newport but I don’t have any family, or wife or girlfriend. I’m free to come and go as I please. I haven’t got to uproot anybody’s’ lives,” King said.
“From Dave Martin’s point of view, and I had a conversation with him, the West Ham training ground is 20 minutes from where he lives. He’s got to think of that bigger picture, which a lot of footballers do and I completely understand.
“For me at such a young age, I would have gone anywhere, to be honest with you. I had contacts with people in Sweden and all over, really. That wouldn’t have been a problem.
“It was well documented that Millwall are actively trying to bring another goalkeeper in, so Dave didn’t want another season of potentially – and I’m not speaking with any inside knowledge here – being further away from his family and not playing.
“Where he had done so well when he was in the team he probably had that confliction in his head. He’s a completely different character to me, and it’s a completely different kettle of fish as he has a wife and young children.
“It’s one hell of a move. All the facilities they’ve got there are unbelievable. He was great when he was at Millwall, and I wish him all the best.”
