Young Millwall striker underlines talent with equaliser – as defender makes comeback

CONOR McLaughlin made his comeback from injury as George Alexander underlined again his potential with an equaliser deep into injury-time against Crewe at The Den on Monday afternoon.

The Lions under-23 side were trailing in their Professional Development League game to Oliver Finney’s first-half goal but substitute Alexander came to the rescue when he looped a header in off the post in the 94th minute.

There may have been a clue to Neil Harris’ starting line-up at Bolton next weekend as Tom Elliott and Aiden O’Brien both started for Kevin Nugent’s side. Alexander came on for Elliott in the 71st minute and Mason Saunders-Henry for O’Brien 10 minutes later.

Senior players David Martin and Fred Onyedinma also started.

McLaughlin has been out of senior action since November 24, with Harris forced to use midfielder Ryan Leonard at Hull last week after Mahlon Romeo’s withdrawal though illness left him with no recognised right-backs.

McLaughlin played 71 minutes on Monday.

Millwall’s under-23s face Birmingham City on Saturday week.

Millwall: 4-4-2: Martin; Brown, Debrah, Parker, McLaughlin (Tiensia 71); Onyedinma, Donovan (c), Hanson, O'Brien (Saunders-Henry 81); White, Elliott (Alexander 71).

Subs not used: Sandford, Topalloj.
