Millwall's Northern Ireland international Fergie nets new deal

SHANE Ferguson has signed a new long-term deal with Millwall.

Ferguson, 27, was due to be out of contract in the summer but has committed his long-term future to the club. Millwall do not reveal contract lengths.

Northern Ireland international Ferguson joined the Lions on loan from Newcastle in August 2015 before making the permanent switch the following January.

Ferguson has made 154 Millwall appearances in all competitions and scored 12 goals.

“I’m really happy, I feel it has been a great season for me,” Ferguson told Millwall's official website.

“I’m happy firstly to be playing games. I spoke to the manager in pre-season and he told me that if I worked hard and kept my head down, I’d get a chance in this team. Thankfully the chance came to be out there playing, and I’m delighted to sign a new deal.

“I’m very grateful to the manager for his faith in me to pick me so often, which in turn has helped me receive callups to the national side.

“It’s massive to play for this club and the fans. I’ve been here four years now, and the fans have welcomed me in. It’s great to be playing here at The Den, and now I’m just really excited to continue playing here in the future.

“The first thing I noticed when I came here is how close this group is. The lads work hard every day and we just try and do our best, which we need to carry on doing. We’ve got to keep looking up the table, as we’ve been putting in some good performances.

“Sometimes maybe a bit of luck hasn’t been going with us, for example with the deflected winner that Swansea scored against us recently. But once we’ve overcome that I feel we can kick on.

“The [FA] Cup is massive too. We know that going to Wimbledon will be tough – they may not have been too great in the League this season, but they showed what they can do in the last round when they knocked out West Ham. We’ll be focusing on them for the rest of this week, and hopefully we can progress to the next round.”
