Millwall goalkeeper Tom King: 'If I'm needed I'm ready'

TOM King says he'll be ready for action if called upon after his first week’s training back at Millwall following his loan spell with AFC Wimbledon.

King, 23, joined the Dons on a season-long loan but was recalled this month.

He regained his place in Wally Downes’ League One side in December after being out of favour since September, and helped them to back-to-back league wins for the first time this season.

Goalkeeper King was open to going back out on loan but Ben Amos chipped a bone in his finger in training last week.

That currently leaves David Martin and King as back-ups to Jordan Archer.

“It’s good to see some old faces and catch up with some new ones as well,” King told NewsAtDen. “It’s been a different time for me going out on loan compared to last year when I went out for the second half of the season.

“I’m fully focused on getting things right and being ready to play some games again. If I’m needed I’m ready, and if I’m not needed I’m prepared to work harder until I am.”

King – whose last appearance for Millwall was in a League Cup game against Reading in August 2017 – is out of contract in the summer but isn’t speculating on what the future might hold.

“What I’ve learned in football is that as soon as you start ruling stuff out that’s exactly when it happens,” he said. “I’m in a place now where I’m getting myself right and getting ready to play whenever I’m needed.

“As soon as I’m needed I’ll be the first one out there and that’ll be the time to show everyone what I can do and give them a little reminder.”

King linked up again this week with Lee Turner, who was his goalkeeping coach at Crystal Palace.

King said: “Lee’s a great character and he’s also a great coach, anything I can take from him will be an absolute bonus.

“For the time being we’re all set on the fact that I need to go out and play games, but as much as I can learn from him and the other goalies when I’m here I will. I’ve known Jordan for a few years now, I spoke to him a lot when I was away. David is great and Ben, when he gets back training, anything I can take from him and add to my game will be a bonus.

“I’ve just got to keep working away waiting for the right opportunity to come.”
