Experienced Shittu replaces Trotter as Millwall vice-captain

MIDFIELDER Liam Trotter has been stripped of the Millwall vice-captaincy in order to lessen the burden on him during matches, according to assistant manager Joe Gallen.

Danny Shittu has replaced the playmaker as Paul Robinson's deputy and the defender wore the armband for the first time during the Lions' 1-1 draw with Bristol City on Tuesday.

And when asked to explain the reasoning behind the change, Gallen said: "Liam is playing very well and we don't want to disrupt his performances.

"When we're without Robinson, Danny is probably the most experienced player we've got. He's played in the Premier League for Watford and Bolton, he's good leader and a good talker.

"It allows Liam to get on with creating chances and scoring goals from midfield and putting in a shift defensively.

"It [being a captain] comes with experience. Liam is only 24-years-old, he's younger than Danny and Danny's been there and done it.

"It's good to have a very experienced captain. If Danny wasn't playing, Liam would be a more than capable replacement but we want him to concentrate on his game."
