Millwall defender: 'We deserve our league position'

JAMES Meredith believes Millwall have earned their shot at a top-six challenge given the work they have put into this season.

Meredith is currently away with Australia for two friendly matches, his own reward for his excellent level of consistency in starting every league game this season.

Meredith, who turns 30 next month, is in his first full season in Championship football having spent most of his career in the leagues below.

But he has been a revelation at this level since joining from Bradford last summer.

And he is enjoying his time at the club with Millwall in the mix for an unlikely finish in the play-off places.

“I’m happy for everyone, for the staff and the team and I feel like we’ve earned it,” Meredith said. “We’ve worked hard and we do what we do well. The team deserve this position in the league.

"I’m feeling good, but it’s at that point coming towards the end of the season when you’ve got to do the right things to keep yourself fresh. If you don’t you could find yourself lagging on a Tuesday night game, for example.”

Meredith will hope to come back from international duty injury-free. He claimed the left-back spot from previous Lions skipper Tony Craig, who was last season’s first-choice.

And he praised Harry Toffolo for pushing him for his place, despite the youngster not having been involved since his January move from Norwich.

Meredith said: “You need the competitiveness of someone biting for your position. It makes you work harder and be better. I can’t afford to have a sloppy game because he’s be right on my toes.”
