Wallace praises Millwall's Romeo – and Northern Ireland international for pushing him

JED Wallace has paid tribute to the form of his partner on Millwall’s right flank, Mahlon Romeo.

Romeo’s mistake gifted Cardiff their goal in the sides’ 1-1 draw at The Den recently, but the young defender bounced back to put in two excellent performances in wins over Birmingham and Sheffield Wednesday.

Romeo has been keeping Northern Ireland international Conor McLaughlin out of the side, and Wallace believes Millwall have good options in every position.

Wallace was impressed with how Romeo handled a potentially difficult situation against Cardiff.

“It was a difficult one, because when he makes a mistake they score,” Wallace said. “When I make a mistake I just cross it behind my goal and it’s, ‘aww’, and I just get back in the team shape. It’s different.

“Mahlon has been brilliant and the reason he has been so good is because he’s got another top player in Conor pushing him. He knows the same as everyone that if you don’t play well you’re out of the team. You’ve got to be concentrated and you’ve got to play well.

“Mahlon and Conor are very different payers, but two top full-backs.

“There’s nothing to say that Sav [George Saville] gets injured – touch wood he doesn’t – and Thommo [Ben Thompson] will come in and won’t let anyone down.

“The likes of Mahlon have come in and there’s such togetherness that when someone does come in from the cold and do well you are happy for them.

“We look strong everywhere on the pitch. You’ve not got good Championship players that aren’t making the bench, and that’s the way it needs to be for us to progress.”
