RYAN Tunnicliffe could make his competitive Millwall debut in the second round of the EFL Cup against Reading.
Tunnicliffe played 71 minutes in an under-23 game last week and was on the bench against Bristol City at the weekend.
Neil Harris is looking forward to the test against Jaap Stam’s side and is set to hand opportunities to a number of players on the fringes of the firs team.
“We’ve spoken about making changes and we can put in senior players that are established at this football club, that’s key,” Harris said.
“I want to win the game, get into the third round and have the opportunity to draw a side from the league above maybe, home or away.
“The cups have been important to us in the last two years. There is a focus on the league and continuing really good performances, but sometimes a good cup win can really inspire."
Stam has vast experience as a player in England, Italy and the Netherlands, and was within 90 minutes of guiding Reading to the Premier League last season.
“It’s another test for me and my young staff, we’re always challenging ourselves," Harris said. "Football at any level isn’t different in the way it’s played. Yes, you play against better players the higher you go, but tactically there are only a certain number of systems you can play or come up against.
“Sometimes you combat it really well, sometimes you’re left scratching your head and have to find solutions. The majority of the time we have been good at finding solutions in games, and after looking back, reviewing and doing something different.
“We’re coming up against managers with vast experience, who have played at the highest level, they are great tests for us.
“We’re playing against a side on Tuesday night that missed out on the Premier League by a penalty kick.
“They’re a good squad and they have strength in depth.”
