Millwall boss has message for new signings

NEIL Harris has cautioned his new recruits they are not guaranteed a regular place in his first-choice side.

Harris has signed seven players this summer, and six were involved in the 3-0 win over Granada on Saturday, the Lions’ last pre-season friendly before their Championship opener against Nottingham Forest next week.

Millwall completed a deal for Ryan Tunnicliffe on Saturday and he will come into contention to face Forest at the City Ground on Friday.

Harris has already said those involved in winning promotion from League One last season will have to fight for their spots in the first XI.

“There’s a lot of competition for places and there were some disappointed players in the dressing room when I named the team [Saturday], as you’d expect,” Harris said.

“It’s easy to say to players, ‘this isn’t necessarily the team’, but players look and think it’s the last game of pre-season and they want to be in the team. And then the side wins.

“But what I remind my players and what they have to remember is that there are going to be at least 50 games this season and we’re going to need a competitive squad. Last year we were light at times for quality options.

“I hope I’ve brought quality players in to compete and I’ve said to the group just because you played last year or the year before doesn’t mean you’re going to start. And just because I’ve brought someone new in doesn’t mean they’re going to start either.

“I’ve got the options to play slightly different formations with players with different attributes – pace, ability to pass, good defensive attributes. We’re going to need all of those qualities.”
