Harris: 'That won't be the Millwall team that starts at Nottingham Forest'

NEIL Harris said the side that started in the 3-0 pre-season win over Granada will not be the one that lines up against Nottingham Forest next Friday night in their Championship opener.

Harris named four of his seven summer signings in his line-up against the Spanish Secunda Division side on Saturday, and brought two more, Tom Elliott and Jake Cooper, off the bench.

Harris also added another midfielder to his squad on Saturday, after Ryan Tunnicliffe completed his free-transfer move to the club following his release by Fulham this summer.

Steve Morison captained the side with club skipper Tony Craig on the bench and Harris had hinted the side he picked in the Lions’ last pre-season friendly before their Championship return would be a strong indication of his preferred XI.

Jed Wallace scored direct from a free-kick in the 27th minute to give Millwall the lead, before the former Wolves winger set up two goals in 60 seconds for Shaun Williams and then Aiden O’Brien.

Granada arrived in south London late in the week after playing two games in the Netherlands, and they looked flat.

Millwall were much sharper, and could have added to their tally but Elliott saw a shot cleared off the line and Shaun Hutchinson’s header hit a post.

“I thought we looked fit, strong, organised, disciplined,” Harris said. “Our use of the ball at times was really, really good. We were against a possession-based team who wanted to play through us and I thought we controlled large parts of the game to stop them doing that.

“We’re going to be in a really competitive league this year against players that have played international football, Premier League football and teams are going to be really good on the ball. We’ll need all the traits we showed today throughout the season, starting next week at Nottingham Forest.

“We have to impose ourselves on teams and I thought today we certainly imposed our game plan on the Spanish side.

“That won’t be the team that plays next week. I thought it was a really good performance. There have been some really strong performances during pre-season.

“There were some outstanding performances individually today. I’ve got a lot to consider between now and Friday night.”
