Burton broke their transfer record this summer, beating the £300,000 they paid to Ross County for Jackson Irvine by splashing out close to half a million pounds for Northern International Liam Boyce from the same club.
Boss Nigel Clough has added experience to his defence, signing former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock who was out of contract after a season at Wigan. Centre-back Jake Buxton also joined from Wigan.
Few expected the Brewers to beat the drop in 2016-17, their first-ever season in the second tier of English football. But Burton finished one point ahead of Nottingham Forest, with Blackburn Rovers below them relegated on goal difference.
Now, with one of the smallest budgets in the division, Clough has to try to build on that finish. With even more spending power in the Championship this year, though, that will not be easy.
Boyce scored 48 goals in 99 games at Ross County, while Matthew Lund showed he has a scoring instinct after 22 goals in four seasons from midfield with Rochdale.
Clough has also brought in another midfielder, Luke Murphy, on loan from Leeds United for the 2017-18 season.
