NEW signing James Meredith has revealed he spoke to Lions legend Tim Cahill before deciding on a move to Millwall.
Bolton were reported to have a serious interest in the defender prior to him signing for Neil Harris’ side from Bradford.
And the 29-year-old has explained how talking to fellow Australian Cahill helped him realise he was making the right choice in moving down to London, despite being tempted to partner up with former boss Phil Parkinson at the Lancashire club.
“I had a few teams at the top end of League One and some Championship teams after me,” Meredith said.
“Bolton were publicly after me, they were coming in pretty strong but, like I said, the manager showed real interest.
“It was tempting, I know how [Bolton boss] Phil Parkinson works, they were offering me a good contract and it was local for me, it wasn't too far away.
“So it was tempting but I didn't believe in my heart that it was the right decision.”
“The gaffer [Harris] said to speak to Tim Cahill. I know him from playing for Australia, I get on with him really well.
“I messaged him and we had a chat. He said it was a great club and, in his words, he said he absolutely loved his time here and the fans loved him.
“Tim mentioned he got on really well with everyone, everyone looked after each other – he said I would be making a really good decision. It was good advice from him.
“He said how well he got on with the gaffer. I think they used to be roommates. Tim is a ledge – he is a great guy.”
