Bolton's Beevs did us a favour – Millwall boss

NEIL Harris was thankful for his former defender Mark Beevers’ injury-time winner for Bolton at Southend that meant Millwall moved level on points with their play-off rivals in sixth place in League One.

Millwall defeated Shrewsbury 2-1 at Greenhous Meadow on Tuesday night at the same time Beevers’ Bolton went 10 points clear in the second automatic promotion spot. The Lions are behind Southend only on goal difference.

Millwall go to Gillingham next and Southend are at Charlton Athletic as the race for the top six hots up.

“Beevs has done us a favour,” Harris admitted. “There are going to be twists and turns between now and April 30, that’s for sure. Ourselves, Southend, Scunthorpe, Fleetwood, Bradford…four from five.

“Rochdale and Oxford might have something to say as well, but all we can focus on is ourselves. We’ve got a healthy points tally with five games to go and we want to continue with a win on Saturday.”

Millwall had to survive a late scare at Greenhous Meadow after Shaun Whalley’s 90th-minute goal halved the lead given to them by goals from Byron Webster and Shaun Hutchinson.

It was the third goal Millwall had conceded in the last minute of normal time or injury-time in their last four games, but Harris was pleased with the overall performance.

He said: “There were moments when they tried to bully us and got the ball forward quickly, but we stood strong. I’m disappointed we conceded the goal at the end, of course. But I won’t criticise my players.

“You just go through spells like that during the season, we’ve scored a lot of late goals ourselves in the league and cup to win games.

“If there are going to be late goals I’d rather they go in at 2-0 up or 3-0 up than if the game is tight.

“Yes, we’ll be speaking to the players about concentrating. Late goals can come and hurt you, but I’m certainly not going to focus on that now.”
