Thompson: We're sorry we couldn't give Millwall fans a better result

BEN Thompson felt Millwall “didn’t turn up” at White Hart Lane last Sunday but conceded there was little his side could do to stop a rampant Tottenham Hotspur winning 6-0.

Spurs moved into the last four of the FA Cup with a devastating performance of attacking football to end Millwall’s 17-game unbeaten run.

Midfielder Thompson wants the Lions to put the result behind them and get back to focusing on promotion, ahead of a crucial League One clash with Bury at The Den on Saturday.

“They’re a top side, there’s a reason why they’re up there in the Premier League, the best league in the world,” Thompson said.

“We didn’t turn up as well as we should but then again what can you do when top players are on form. I don’t think there was much we could do. Our focus now is promotion, it always has been.

“This was an adventure but our focus is now on Saturday, we have to go again and not dwell on this."

Spurs lost Harry Kane to injury in the seventh minute, but Thompson said it barely affected their opponents’ overall quality.

“As good as he is all their players are top level, they’re all threatening,” he admitted. “I don’t think it made too much of a difference. We got shown what the top level is all about, how good the Premier League is.

“We go into Saturday and forget about this.”

Thompson paid tribute to Millwall supporters, 3,681 of whom were inside the stadium and never stopped encouraging their side.

“The fans were top drawer as they are most weeks,” Thompson said. “They made a lot of noise, you could hear them on the pitch. They backed us 100 per cent and we’re sorry we couldn’t give them a better result.

“At the end of the day they know Tottenham’s capabilities and how good they really are. We didn’t expect to come here and beat them 3-0. We can hold our heads up high and go into Saturday and hopefully get three points in the league.
