Harris explains basis of remarkable Millwall record

NEIL Harris said the groundwork for Millwall’s remarkable recent defensive record was laid when they were conceding goals.

Millwall defeated Peterborough United on Tuesday night through Lee Gregory’s penalty to extend their unbeaten run to 16 games and it is now 10 games – 14 hours of football – since they conceded a goal.

Neil Harris’ side have kept 11 clean sheets in their last 12 games, but before that it was only seven in their previous 33 this season.

Harris paid tribute to Lions assistant manager David Livermore for his work on the defensive aspects of Millwall’s game.

And Harris said that with so many fixtures recently – eight in 28 days in February alone – restricting the amount of time that can be spent on anything other than recovery, it is in the analysis of opponents that crucial gains are made.

“It’s not necessarily hard work on the training pitch at the moment, because we spend limited amount of time there,” Harris said.

“There is a lot of organisation and preparation off the training pitch, players know their jobs and they know what the opposition are going to bring.

“We do a lot of analysis on opposition players and teams, so that helps individuals and the team.

“But there was a lot of work done on the training pitch when we were conceding goals, especially leading up to Christmas.

“David Livermore, my assistant, spent a lot of time with the back four to get them into good habits.

“I think there is also an element of form, individually. Earlier in the season there is no doubt we had some big-name players that weren’t performing. And now they are.”
