Report: Millwall U21s 1-3 Barnet U21s

PAUL Robinson and Tamika Mkandawire played 90 minutes for Millwall's U21 side as they were beaten 3-1 by Barnet at The Den.

Senior players Danny Shittu and John Marquis also featured and got valuable match fitness under their belts, with the latter scoring a first-half free-kick to put the Lions ahead.

Kenny Jackett's first team coach Tim Breacker watched proceedings from the stands and will have been pleased to see Robinson and Mkandawire come through unscathed on their returns from injury, despite the result.

The first opportunity of the afternoon fell to the Lions in the eighth minute when Marquis broke clear down the left flank, surged into the penalty area but dragged his shot wide with strike partner Aiden O'Brien perhaps better placed to score at the far post.

Midfielder Niall McManus then tested visiting keeper Sam Cowler for the first time with a swerving drive from the edge of the area, before Ahmed Abdulla's dipping volley was tipped over by Steve Mildenhall at the other end.

Millwall took the lead in the 23rd minute when Marquis was bundled over on the edge of the area and powered the resulting free-kick around the wall and into the bottom corner.

The Bees were soon level, though, when George Sykes fired home after Freddie Warren's initial effort had been parried by Mildenhall  – and the Lions keeper was forced into action to keep the scores level when Clovis Kamdjo's cross-shot flew goalwards in the 42nd minute.

But the visitors eventually took the lead for the first time in the match when Sykes grabbed his second of the afternoon – a simple finish into the corner after Jamal Lowe's cut-back had left Mildenhall stranded.

The Lions initially responded well to going behind, with both Tobi Alabi and substitute Charlie Penny seeing efforts well-saved by Cowler in quick succesion, but Lowe curled in a precise free-kick from the edge of the area to make it 3-1 to Barnet in the 88th minute.

Millwall U21s: Mildenhall; Mkandawire, Robinson, Shittu, Richards; Alabi; McManus, Sammoutis, Twum; Marquis, O'Brien.

Barnet U21s: Cowler, Kamdjo (Hackett 65mins), Stephens (McCluskey 35mins), Johnson Antwi, Lowe, Abdulla, Edgar, Warren, Sykes, Gambin.
