ASTON Villa have decided not to make a bid for Millwall midfielder Liam Trotter – opting to sign Crewe captain Ashley Westwood instead in a bargain deal.
NewsAtDen understands the Premier League club were considering a deadline-day swoop for the Lions' vice-captain after seeing a deal for Charlton's Dale Stephens break down.
But Villans boss Paul Lambert was put-off by the 24-year-old's price tag and has lined up Crewe's Westwood for just £400,000 plus add-ons.
Lambert's offer for another target, Addicks star Stephens, was worth an initial fee of just £700,000 – with landing a big-money striker the priority for the Midlands club on deadline day.
Trotter looks set to remain at The Den at the end of a summer of speculation about his future, having also been linked with Southampton, Stoke and West Ham during the transfer window.
The former Ipswich trainee is set to re-open contract talks with Millwall next month but it remains to be seen whether he will put pen-to-paper on a new deal.
