Millwall's August fixture schedule "a joke"

NEIL Harris is still giving his backing to the EFL Trophy, but said Millwall’s fixture schedule in August was “a joke”.

The Lions defeated West Brom’s U23s 2-0 in Group H of the southern section of the competition in front of an attendance of 2,054 on Tuesday night, but Harris could only name five substitutes on the bench.

It was Millwall’s eighth fixture in 25 days since the start of the season.

Asked if he thinks the competition could be a success, Harris said: “I don’t think that’s really for me to judge, I think that’ll be judged on attendances.

He added: “What it was was a great opportunity for West Brom’s U23s to come and get this experience.

“Will it bring the crowds back? No, if I’m being honest, I can’t see it. Something needed changing, the League have come up with an idea to try and make it work.

“I’m not going to judge it on one game. Time will tell. What I would judge it on is the timing of the games. That’s our eighth game in four weeks. That’s a joke, that’s a joke.

“West Brom have players on international duty so they can’t even pick their full quota of players. I’ve got an injury crisis in the club and could only field five subs. The timing of it needs to be looked at it but that’s not a criticism, it’s a request more than anything.”
