Hutchinson may have to wait for Millwall debut

SUMMER recruit from Fulham Shaun Hutchinson is a doubt for Millwall’s first League One fixture of the season against Oldham this weekend.

Centre-back Hutchinson lasted just 18 minutes on his first appearance at The Den against Brentford last Saturday before going off with a tight hamstring.

Lions boss Neil Harris said a scan on Monday confirmed the problem and that Hutchinson will struggle to be fit to face the Latics.

Joe Martin played 45 minutes against Welling on Monday night but the League Cup fixture against Barnet next Tuesday is a more realistic target for the full-back.

Tony Craig moved to the centre of defence to partner Byron Webster against the Bees when Hutchinson went off. Millwall’s club captain could start in that position against Oldham with Shane Ferguson dropping into the defence.

Sid Nelson is also in contention to start, and Harris is satisfied with the strength in depth in his defence.

“Sid only did 60 minutes on Monday night so comes into the thinking on Saturday,” Harris said.

“Going into Saturday we certainly have options. If Shaun or Joe don’t make it we’ve got Tony or Sid to play centre-back, or Fergie at left-back. There is a lot for me to consider before this weekend.”

Meanwhile Ben Thompson, who also had to go off against Brentford after a kick to the calf, trained on Monday and should be fit for Saturday’s clash.
