BEN Thompson is impressed by the quality of Millwall’s new signings, and echoed Jordan Archer in saying there is “only one goal now after last season” – securing promotion to the Championship.
Thompson, who met Shaun Hutchinson during the summer when both players were at Millwall’s training ground working on their fitness before the official start of the club’s pre-season programme, has been getting to know the other new signings David Worrall and Gregg Wylde and believes they can spark a promotion charge this season.
Thompson said: “We do spend a lot of time together. We get team-bonding sessions in there. We’ve got a great bunch of lads and even the new lads who have come in have got on really well.
“All the boys got on last season and hopefully we’ll all get on this year.
“The three players from what I’ve seen from training are very good players. Hopefully they can add that little bit of quality that maybe we missed and we can have a successful season.”
Thompson rose to become one of Millwall’s most important players last season, making 36 appearances of his club total of 37, and he endeared himself to fans with his energy and his physical performances.
And the 20-year-old midfielder outlined his hopes for the next campaign ahead of this weekend’s friendly with Bromley at Hayes Lane.
“This season I want to start more games, and from the start of the season,” Thompson said. “That’s the aim, but it’s football and you have to be aware that anything can happen. But I want to be in the team for the first game of the season.
“There’s only one goal now after last season, one aim, and that’s promotion. Automatic would be great, but play-offs, it doesn’t matter. As long as we go up.”
