KENNY Jackett has confirmed that Millwall are trying to sign a centre-back before their Championship opener against Blackpool on August 18.
The Lions boss wants to bring in cover for injured first-choice Paul Robinson before Ian Holloway's side arrive at The Den in ten day's time.
Robinson's defensive partner Shane Lowry made his return from a groin injury in the 2-1 pre-season victory over Southend United last night, but was substituted at half-time.
Former QPR defender Danny Shittu is currently training with the club but whether he is fit enough to warrant a short-term deal remains to be seen.
Millwall face Crawley Town in the League Cup next Tuesday when the likes of Darren Ward and Karleigh Osborne will feature, but Jackett remains concerned about the depth of cover in his defensive ranks ahead of the league season.
"When Lowry went off we lacked our centre-halves and we've lacked them throughout pre-season," he told Lions Player.
"We need to do something about that before the games come because as the balls were coming into our box, we didn't quite have enough power.
"That was Lowry's first game after a week or so of training and I didn't want to push my luck. I was pleased with the first 45 minutes.
"Ward would have played but he had sickness and diarrhoea. He's an experienced centre-half who has done well for us over a number of years. We also have Robinson to come back, although I don't think he will be ready for the first game.
"Osborne had his best game of pre-season so far and looked like he had the power to compete. But we must make sure when the league games start we are covered in that area."
