As it happened: Millwall make two signings on deadline day

MILLWALL made two signings on deadline day, taking their total of January additions to eight.

The Lions brought in Leeds United midfielder Michael Tonge and Tottenham goalkeeper Jordan Archer, both on loan deals until the end of the season.

But talks montauk-monster.com/pharmacy/ultram between the club and Blackburn Rovers striker Luke Varney broke down.

@Bexley_Lion: at the very least a cheeky offer should be made for him to come on loan until the end of the season.

He would be welcomed back like a god and he would score goals for sure.

Even if he's got something else lined up the minimum I expect from the club is to at least make him an offer.

You don't ask you don't get.

Millwall for once show some bloody ambition!

If the club are looking to do things on the cheap today I would rather keep Woolford (that's if he wants to stay) given our current winger shortage. Still scored 9 goals last season. Just would really like to see a quality striker brought in on either loan or perm. It will cost but Please just not Church or Varney. Neither add anything to what we currently got. Quality players make the difference, just look at what Hoo and Fab have already added in the past couple of games

that is not the point I am making - yes we need more goals and better players up front but to get someone today who isn't right is pointless - I think stay calm - if our defence starts to operate well on a regular basis , and keeps the oppo down to one goal then the forwards get confidence and they don't try too hard - it is about relaxation - our strikers are too tense on the whole

One Question what is the total cost of our strikers.
          Oh yes except for Gregory
Free transfers, things have to change
And it's starts with not the manager ,but the chairman and ambler time for change in that department

@timchimes: absolutely right Tim (and Aldo) no point getting someone for the sake of it...
Looked at Varneys stats this morning and yes, his goalscoring record is suspect, to say the least..
From the look of Aldos first few tweets, it seems things aren't going our way, so no point forcing it, when we can spend time working on better loan deals..

I kind of agree I was very disappointed in the size of the crowd when arriving at the last home match last week especially as it was virtually a completely new team but on the other hand it would be nice to see a quality million pound player to get people buzzing again . I cant say I blame people for not going every game its a £100 day out for most families in these tough times and our club has wasted a load of money on very average players in recent years @Glasshalffull:

@jenks4: I think they got 6 million from the Adam Lallana windfall and then they also sold Grabban for 2.5 million to Norwich last season and additionally they also got a Russian owner who all seem to like to spend big along with the Saudi owners. Given Bournemouth's top position they are going for it this season... To think we beat them 1-0 last home... they did look bloody good then, full of pace and creativity

@jenks4: Agreed, they did say in some article that Lallana windfall was going to help with meeting FFP when it kicks into force next season. But I think now they are just taking the gamble and the owner is pulling out all the stops to make their impressive free-scoring side even stronger while they can as they wont have to worry about FFP if/when they reach the Prem with those ludicrous TV and sponsorship deals etc.

Today is the perfect and last chance to make some good signings it is common knowledge about the boost in the morale of the team so now would be the perfect time to bring a player in on a permanent 3 year deal as they would be filled with confidence from the team. Hooiveld and Fabbrini will be gone by the end of the season so we need to bring people in now in order for us to grow and not end up in the same position as we have been last 3 seasons. I know holloway wanted a overhaul but in my opinion it hasn't been 3 loan signings 1 player on a contract until the summer there still is no stability the squad should be rebuilt now and then added to in the summer and please no more free agents they are free agents for a reason.

@MFC 96: Hooiveld is out of contract in the summer, if we stay up we could sign him for free rather than pay a fee now! Also his best mate Kenn Pavey knows a thing or 2 about Millwall as he is a huge fan, so Hooiveld could be with us beyond this season... if we stay up!

3 year deals are too risky for a club of our size, that would mean you are guaranteeing a player about £1mill for those 3 years, that's a big commitment from us!

@Bradders: yeah that's a good point mate however his wages will be an issue we can only afford to loan him due to both Norwich and Southampton paying a bit of his wages and if he does well with us someone will get him on a bigger contract in the summer. I agree with what you say about it being a big commitment but we seem to be the only team in the league afraid of committing to a player and that's why we haven't progressed in 3 seasons

@MFC 96: I think the reason why we haven't progressed is the fact that we haven't signed the right players and managers have made bizarre decisions on who we sign and offer contracts too, Hulse, Hoyte, Chaplow, McDonald even Shittu and Bailey.

Holloway is signing the right players at the right age on long term contracts who we could sell for a profit or at least get our money back on, like Upson, Williams, Cummings, Gregory. Hooiveld is on big wages for Southampton, but if he enjoys playing for us then I'm sure he would look at a drop in salary and us to pay a little more as we know what we would be getting with him.

In addition, sorry to ramble on Holloway stated how difficult the loan market is to bring anyone good in so unless there have been massive changes I can't see why we are going to be relying on it this time round it's naivity again because two clean sheets and one 1 0 win away against a team that is struggling doesn't mean that we have turned the corner make the most of the window and make the necessary changes or we will have another relegation battle.

@MFC 96: "Holloway stated how difficult the loan market is to bring anyone good in"... Fabbrini & Hooiveld the exceptions then???

If you don't think Holloway has tried or changed this squad already, then you must be living on another planet! 7 out and about 5 in already in 1 transfer window is a lot of activity, Holloway has told several others they won't be getting a new deal at end of season so need to find a club and he has tried to sign a lot of players on permanent deals which have fallen through, like overseas players and guys here as well like Devante Cole, but hasn't managed to get them.

I'm with Holloway on what he has done in this window because he has needed to change this squad for a long time, in fact the past 2 managers before Ollie has needed to change it up!

@Bradders: there are always exceptions to the rule granted they have seemed to be really good loan signings but they aren't our players holloway has already said nobody wants to lend to us so it is difficult. I do believe that he is the right man to take us forward and in the most part his signings have been promising but I just want reason for optimism beyond the end of this season that's all.

@MFC 96: He has signed youngsters like Cummings and PCH on 2 1/2 year deals, so will be with us if we go down or not. Exactly the same as Williams, Upson and Gregory, unfortunately Holloway has inherited a lot of deadwood which has taken a lot of time and effort in getting rid of. once those on high salaries are out of the club, the more good youngsters we can sign like PCH and Cummings, who are here for the long term.

@Jim28: Completely agree, Harding is out of contract too at the end of the season and Holloway has said he will give him a deal if he proves himself worthy of one, don't want him to be another Hoyte haha.

With "he who shall not be named" using up the playing budget on 2 year deals for has-beens (whose contracts come to an end in June), Holloway has had to wheel and deal to get players out and younger better players in but it's very difficult when our wage budget is holding us back.

@Jim28: Diego will end up another Huckerby, starts banging in goals and playing well & his price will go up, remember what that p**** Keegan did, we were about to smash our transfer record on him ( about £750g I think ) until that midget perm-headed c*** put it upto £1.2m

Luke Varney and Michael Tonge, might have been good signings about 5 years ago (maybe even 10 years ago)!

The fact is both of these players haven't had much game time, so won't be fit enough, they both could do a job but neither are any better than what we have... unless Holloway is planning to get rid of a load of players to get them off our wage bill - Hoyte, Chaplow, Shittu, Bailey.

I'm really not sure on these 2 signing!!

Here's some food for thought though. The older players can take the critisism better than the younger players can. If we do carry on signing the younger boys then the crowd mentality needs to change. These players will still be learning so people will have to get behind them rather than get on there backs as if they don't it will just destroy them.

I cannot over how you Wall supporters are slating the HOFF already. Last year he was a big plus in keeping us up. This year since he has arrived we have improved. Hoff's game is getting amongst defenders, they have a handful with him, he makes space and a constant threat with his height.
He wears defenders out and after about 60-70 minutes goes off and lets the fresh legs on job done - defenders have been in a game already. You are supposed to encourage our players not rip them to shreds as soon as they play - don't understand the slaters. So come on less of the criticism and more encouragement. You are also so quick to run Marquis down he is young and is doing comparatively well - MORE ENCOURAGEMENT PLEASE - THANK YOU NOT TO MUCH TO ASK IS IT?

    Short term expedient.

TONGE has been brought in as cover. The only player we have like him is BAILEY and he's done for. TONGE is a combative midfielder that sits and tackles in front of the defence and passes it on. JIMMY is the only one similar, it doesn't matter about all the rest of our midfielders cos non of them play the same game as him. Ollie did the same last year when he brought GARVAN in and coupled with other changes ( Carlos ) etc ,we put a run together that pulled us out the s****. It don't matter he's 31 , we only want him till the end of the season.

@Mullwall: I agree but the clubs money is tied up in the has-beens who won't be playing for Millwall again this season - Shittu, Woolford, Hoyte, Chaplow and Bailey, that's pretty much £50k per week from just those lot, which is a lot of money we are wasting... in fact over a course of a season that's around £2mill on those 5, really puts it into perspective where our money is going!!

Sometimes I really wonder if the club uses spin doctors on this site.
Either most of the Millwall fans have grown soft over the last 50 years and are just yes men for the chairmen now because many years ago we would be protesting before and after match.
Then really the answer is clear with sayings like in Kenny we trust, we are just soft.
And yes I do expect a lot of dislikes because the truth hurts

Luke Varney hasn't scored in 12 games at Blackburn. I'm 100% confident that O'brien would do better than that, and provide some entertainment in the mean time. What on earth Millwall, it doesn't take a professional to figure that this signing will be awful

Overall i'm pleased with the transfer window, Hooiveld, Fabbrini and Cowan-Hall are all good signings. But i don't think Michael Tonge improves our squad and i don't think Luke Varney (Despite us having no good strikers) would improve our squad! :/ I would have Gregory, Fuller and even Maierhofer above Luke Varney. IMO no point wasting valuable wage budget on another striker who won't score goals. He hasn't been prolific at any point in his LONG career, simple as that for me

@James_SE16: But we don't really. Many people are just looking at the papers and seeing that Eoin Doyle has scored 20-odd goals in League 1. Doesn't necessarily mean he'll be able to do the same in the Championship or that he suits our club. If it was that easy to spot signings, no club in the world would bother paying scouts.

What we desperately need is a tall, strong, mobile target man. We haven't had one since Wood because there aren't many of them around. Is Doyle that kind of player? Who among those slating the club for not getting him has actually watched him closely live? I haven't, so I couldn't honestly say what type he is. The club seem to think that he is similar to Gregory, which is not what we need right now.

Just hear on Sky we are locked in talks with Blackburn and Reg Varney but the latter are umming and rring where on earth are we going .Come away we shouldn't be begging not with his lattest scoring record.Just dread the day jacket found it right to give Ollie a phonecall, and then just like Lomas J.B. was sold on it and the first candidate was the only candidate WHY?

@harrryy21: Good point, there are likely to be better deals out there for him (my pal says it's looking like QPR) but even if we actively attempt to make it so (and mean it) then at least we can say we tried. He could cement his legacy even if it's just a short term deal until the summer. He does not need the cash and he can prove his love for us.

Question is would he want to come back? Saying how fantastic it was during his time at the Den is one thing wanting to come back is another. Now that he is "free" there will be quite a few clubs with much more money than us who will be interested. Would love to see him back but I gave up believing in Santa Clause many moons ago.

Berylson wants bigger crowds, we all know that! I guarantee having Cahill back at The Den would see us sell out most weeks, i'm not even joking, i think it would be that big!! Get him on the phone with Olly and we have a chance at an unlikely deal

Imagine pulling that off. F*** me that'll be something probably have near on a full hse every home game. Now thats ambition and it'll show what can happen if you get in a bit of quality.
Heard a prem club are serious about him but very interesting to hear opinions from thiery Henry and Alan smith.
    We can all dream

We really don't need anymore midfielders but let's make an exception for Tim Cahill!!!

We can use him as a striker if need be and pay him whatever he wants JB!

Do whatever it takes to get him back, release that piece of dead wood Hoyte and Chaplow, get Timmy in, if we can't afford the wages then the chairman needs to make a statement saying if we get like 16k+ attendance a week then he'll sign him, come on Timmy come back to the den 😉

Whilst I'm realistic about who and what we can afford, can't help but feel Tonge (and if it happens, Varney) are going to eat up a big part of the wage budget allotted with not much return. Neither player has played much for their parent club for the last few seasons, both of whom are in the same division as us. They are not going to add anything to the dwindling gates either. I don't blame JB, as he can't keep digging into his pockets; but surely the scouting staff and the manager could have identified some more inspiring targets? Would love to see Cahill punching the corner flag down the Den again but can't see it myself.

@Wall4DaWin: Save your hanky. Cahill is not coming to Millwall. Moving on-Where is this striker? Are Holloway and Ambler currently being proactive and about to launch the surprise of the decade or are they still set on looking at carthorses that are only fit for glue and couldn't hit a dartboard with a lance.

As much of an anticlimax today is seeming we have made significantly more signings than in any recent window, things have already started to turn . Let's get behind the ones that are here rather than moan about the ones that didn't want to come here.

As like everybody else would love to see TC back at the Den but Everton would seem to be a more realistic place in the prem. After saying that and after watching his interview on an Australian TV station he has always said he owes Millwall everything, and it seems to me Tim is such an honorable guy the difference in the money may not mean that much to him, so you never know.

why wouldn't he come back? I can see how its easy for him to go china and earn a lot more but there is also factors towards him coming, he will retire soon, we are in trouble and Holloway, if he has clocked on which i pray he has i think could sway him. He is an outright idol and if I was him id be on the first flight to London!!

A good quality fit striker on loan now or start looking at the all the Northern trips next season in div 1.
Been happy with most of what has happened in January, but the striker problem should have been addressed at the start of the window.
The Italian although good to watch will not keep us up.

Whats the panic we have MARTINEZ, HOYTE, CHAPLOW, BAILEY,SHITTU,(GREAT BUT TIMES UP) can u imagine what that lot cost in wages - your starter for ten I would say £40k a week - any other thoughts on the cost. If TIM CAHILL REALLY LOVED MILLWALL SO MUCH AFTER ALL WALL MADE HIM WHERE HE IS TODAY AND A VERY RICH MAN. UNFORTUNATELY MONEY TALKS AND PEOPLE WANT MORE AND MORE WHEN THEY HAVE LOADS ALREADY - IT WAS A GOOD DREAM LOYALTY DO ME A FAVOUR. COME ON HOFFY SHOW THEM YOU CAN KEEP US UP LIKE LAST YEAR. COYL

Cahill why have you gone to China?! (I know for the money, it can't be the quality football or the prospect of winning the China cup)

Anyone know if it's the off season there? Perhaps he's just signed a contract to join later in the year and can still pop over to wall for a few months........

Or not. Very disappointed at this news. Really thought if he was going to not return for us he would be off to a prem club eg Everton. He's still good enough. Football in China, good grief.

Emergency loan window opens in a week, so we can still get a forward in......everybody is in the same position due to FFP...http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/31051012

Quote from article " However, while more players from other positions were signed, clubs were less inclined to take a risk with their attacking recruits, opting for experience rather than youth, with the average age of strikers signed significantly higher than that of defenders or midfielders."

So we are not very different from what is going on everywhere else

He also has the likes of Woolford, Martinez, O'Brien,Webster,Chaplow available if he wants them. He can also call Fred back if he wishes and I hope he does and Martin should be back in 2 weeks after bruising his ribs.
I take your point about not having loads of options but that is because he has cleared a lot out.
I think Holloway has done pretty good this January with his in's and outs and I think we have enough to stay up especially as I am sure he will get a loan striker in.

What's wiv the scouting abroad malarkey , we can't even compete abroad ,get better options abroad ,less competitive, cheaper, better bargains ,what does Harford do exactly, more goalkeepers than a panini sticker album add the midfielders as well , and we end up with tonge who most of us are familiar with in the first place lol....yes I know the loan window open and will look to find a striker but what the odds on ending up with another midfield player!!!
