Report: Millwall 0-1 Bolton

MILLWALL suffered their third straight home defeat as Darren Pratley's clinical second-half strike handed Bolton three points.

The Lions should have had a penalty early in the second half when Lee Gregory was brought down by Andy Lonergan but referee Stuart Attwell saw nothing wrong.

Replays showed clear contact on Gregory as he lifted the ball over the goalkeeper, who would surely have been sent off had the officials made the right decision.

But Millwall were poor thereafter and can have no complaints about the final result.

Bolton's winner came in the 68th minute when Pratley latched onto Lee Chung-Yong's pass, evaded Danny Shittu's sliding challenge and finished superbly.

Ian Holloway's side offered little in response and were booed off at the end.

Mark Beevers withdrew from Millwall's starting line up with illness, paving the way for Alan Dunne to return to the defence alongside Shittu.

Shittu, who skippered the Lions to a 1-0 win at Brighton in their previous match, retained the armband despite club captain Dunne's inclusion in the side.

Unbeaten in their last six, Bolton made a confident start at The Den and had plenty of early joy down Millwall's left-hand side behind full back Scott Malone.

They duly carved out the first opening of the evening when Darren Pratley's shot deflected behind and Tim Ream's header from the corner was parried by David Forde.

Bolton were were almost caught out on the break when Magaye Gueye's clever ball over the top was cut out just before it reached Lee Gregory.

In the 15th minute, Scott McDonald's flick found Malone on the overlap but his low cross into the danger area was hacked clear.

The Lions almost went ahead when Gregory brought down Gueye's pass on his chest but the striker rifled narrowly wide of the far post.

Shaun Williams drilled wide from distance before Rob Hall got goal-side of the home defence, only to shoot tamely at Forde.

But the Millwall goalkeeper was required to make a more meaningful save moments later when Pratley caught hold of a first-time shot, which was pushed away.

Angel Martinez almost marked his home debut with a goal but, on the stroke of half time, he steered a half-volley wide of the target from Andy Wilkinson's cross.

The Lions' start to the second period was encouraging but they had two penalty appeals turned down in quick succession during a spell of pressure.

First Gregory burst in behind the Bolton defence before his heels were clipped by Lonergan and then McDonald was bundled over seconds later.

But ref Attwell was unmoved by both challenges, prompting Holloway to go ballistic in the dugout.

Malone's 53rd-minute strike was held by Lonergan following good work by Gueye as Millwall continued to push.

But Gueye was withdrawn soon after and the Lions missed his energy.

Visiting manager Neil Lennon threw on ex-Den midfielder Liam Trotter and he almost scored with his first touch, but Forde was equal to his drive.

Bolton winger Rob Hall then struck the inside of the post before the ball cannoned off Forde and, fortunately for the Lions, away to safety.

But Wanderers eventually took the lead through Pratley's well-taken strike, which arrowed across goal and into the roof of the net.

Millwall's one and only chance to rescue a point came when Martyn Woolford burst through but Lonergan sprinted off his line to smother the midfielder's shot.

@col: Lomas never stood a chance - he was rubbish and an ex-Hammer, whereas Holloway is equally rubbish, but has great PR.

For me the time for Holloway to walk has come. The bloke's a charlatan. No more rubbish talk from him, his players or deluded fans who still believe he's the only man for the job. Give me a proper manager like Lennon, Rowett or Symons who can come in and actually make a positive difference.

@Micky Lions: if I had a pound for every time we gave the ball away, trying to play tip tap passes, I'd buy the club and sack him.

That was up there with the worst performances I've seen at the Den. Malone, Martin, Woolford and Mcd did the same little triangles in danger areas yet can't pass a simple ball in the final third. Shittu did well tonight and as usual Gregory was full od running and energy. Maggie found him with two great balls in the first half and was subsequently subbed by IH for Martin. I seriously have to question the managers decisions and the commitment demonstrated by most of the players tonight. No urgency, no fight, no bottle. Instead of all this intricate passing IH wants them to do, why not try the simple ball and passing forwards occasionally. Even Williams was off tonight with his passing. Sort it out IH that was a total disgrace.

    We are s**t.
Holloway your side are crap to watch,as bad as Lomas.
And JB wonders why we get small crowds - like tonight.

I await IH`s latest excuse for another HOME dire performance.

did'nt make it to to the game tonight, but sounds like we were well beat. this group of players just does'nt look good enough for this division. dont like shouting for the managers head but some of these players dont appear to be giving it all and that is a really bad sign. If we dont get a win in the next three games he has to go, not got a clue who we would get but it could'nt get any worse so nothing to lose. Go on like this and crowds will be down to 7000! . very sad, gutted.

Holloway is famous for teetering on the brink of genius and madness, and this season we've had all madness and no genius. Gueye was so clearly not the man to take off, and Lee Martin was abysmal tonight. Woolford & Malone have been abysmal all season. We want so many bloody touches when we get it forward that by the time we move on goal there are two banks of men behind the ball. Martinez fits the Holloway style of neat passing triangles, but I can only think the plan must've been Williams & Bailey in the middle this year; one for skill and one for muscle. All I've seen this season is big defenders just pushing us off the ball. Two years since Wood left and there have been no goals in the team since.
But the big picture is, can we be surprised that average teams all win at The Den when our record signing was in THE 80S? I don't want the club to be run by a nutter like Leeds or Orient but if JB wants to run a Championship club we need to spend Championship money. Tonight they were trying and they're just limited players.

What a load of old tosh.
Atwell should be hung drawn and quartered.
As should most of this squad.
I said last week we got away with murder and also said we'll done for the win. Tonight we got exactly what we deserved.
    Shame on all of em.
    Millwall til I die.
Our anthem is no one likes us but f*** me I never thought for one minute that would ever include me cause right now I'm really not liking our club, from top to bottom. We will pay a very long and heavy price for the boards inadequate decision for p.i.s.s.i.n.g.our club up the wall with pathetic decisions and lack of ambition.
Yes jb has ploughed some of his wealth into our club but the people he has around him (most, not all) have really got to go. It's not just the squad as we have been absolute s.h.i.t for a good couple yrs, it's the people who hand out the contracts to these thieving mugs.
Well we won't be getting rid of any of em cause they're all to f****** stupid to put themselves in the shop windows to show potential suites what they're made of. We are stuck with this s.h.i.t til end of season which means either selling our better couple of players to buy new or another struggle with over the hill loans.
Ho Ho Ho merry Christmas you thieving load of BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP!!!!!
    on a brighter note
    Merry Christmas to all
Let's have fingers and toes crossed for a better new yr.

A combination of very loose passing by us and Bolton not giving us a time on the ball = an extremely frustrating game to watch. We looked aimless for most of the game, more so after the changes... Saying that, I thought the Mcdonald for Fuller sub was the right move - and I can understand why Jimmy came in for Wilkinson - but the Maggie for Martin sub was an error IMO. Maggie was looking very sharp tonight and pretty much as soon as he came off we didn't look right. Maybe Ollie's got one eye on the xmas fixtures and was saving him?? An error nonetheless.
Don't know what's going on with the Fuller/Gregory partnership either - were they taking turns with each other to be a lone striker or winger?? Because they were so far apart....?!? Knock ons and passes WASTED.. NOBODY THERE!! Baffled???
Didn't help with Bolton getting away with every trick in the book = Diving into the f**king ground on every challenge - while being the most dirtiest c***s when it's the other way round.... and getting away with it...
p.s. what the f**k is going on with our free kicks?! Did Martin realistically think that he could get that ball up and over the wall and under the bar, at pace, from that distance?! How about trying a low and hard shot - preferably on the side where there's no wall - even low and hard at the wall = deflections.... Begging to be smashed - and other teams have done it us... Just another part of our attack rendered useless if nothing ever comes from opportunities like that... much like our corners..... B*LL**KS!!

@timchimes: The point is that Dunne isn't a centre-half and he isn't lauded on here like some kind of f*kin superhero. We don't have one decent centre-half at the club. The self-proclaimed Messiah hasn't worked that out in nearly a year and that just about says it all because the one he signed is sh*te as well.

Cant see the point of sacking him at this stage , but they were rank bad substitutions , totally lost our shape and surrendered the midfield until jimmy came on , upto a fortnight ago i thought we were a reasonable side without direction, we seem to have abandoned the passing game because of results but tonight and brighton were horrible disjointed efforts, very very worrying.

Well it's not Ollies fault, the people above on the board and above, don't give him enough money to buy decent ( Good ) players. Most of these ones sadly are too slow or are not championship standard. We must accept that we are only Div 1 quality at the moment ( TRUTH ). The high point this evening was having a Pint in the Blue Anchor with Stormin' Norman. NOLU, WDC .

@BUSHWACKER14: Birmingham and Bolton are skint, but look at the job Lennon and Rowett are doing with very average players. We know the players aren't world-beaters, but a good manager gets the very best out of his players and Holloway hasn't even come close to achieving that.

Not a massive holloway fan tbh but fans calling for his head are crazy. I know we're playing s*** but look at the players at his disposal and how many of them are 'his' players?!
    Williams (our best player imo)
    Gregory- real goal threat
Wilkinson- solid full back, typical Millwall player.
Gueye- starting to show what his made of and looks promising.
Upson- good squad player, neat and tidy and would start for me.
Martinez- unfit still but looks a decent footballer.
The rest of the team aren't his players. I know some signings haven't worked like Webster and fuller but fuller has done an ok job has changed games we've been losing and Webster could come good and if he don't hasn't cost us much budget wise as cheap wages. Let him clear the squad in the summer and rebuild, if still in same position this time next year then yeah he can go but at least he is trying to build a club from bottom up not just a team for the next game!!
    It was dire tonight tho.

Biggest problem was midfield was over run again to many similar players in there trying to pass and no ball winners think jimmy needs to play in certain games when teams have decent ball players like tonight the DVD man ran us ragged because there was no one there to close him down and break up play

yes totally - short passes going nowhere - turning back when they should be driving to goal - wrong decisions all night - Lee had to be stopped - jimmy is the only player we have that can track players like that which shows out lack of personnel -lee martin was an utter joke

Agree Martin was poor but he's just come back from injury so no real surprise he didn't have the desired impact.

Why he came on for Gueye though is baffling as he was one of the few having a good game!
