MILLWALL U18s boss Justin Skinner says there is a buzz of excitement within his squad ahead of Saturday's FA Youth Cup tie against Newcastle.

The Lions host the Magpies in the third round of the competition tomorrow and Skinner is encouraging fans to get down to The Den to support the team.

Striker Jamie Philpot, above, is expected to start up front, having this week been nominated for League Football Education's goal of the month award.

Philpot and teammate JP Rylah are on a 11-man shortlist for the gong after scoring crackers against Colchester United in November (video below).

Looking ahead to the Newcastle clash, Skinner said: "Like every year, it's really good to play on these pitches and the FA Youth Cup has an added spice

"It doesn't get much better than to be playing a Premier League team like Newcastle, who have a category one academy, at The Den and at 3pm on a Saturday.

"The boys are excited – the whole academy is excited.

"With the first team playing on Friday, it opens up the chance for fans to come along. It should be a good occasion. If we can get some support, that would be fantastic.

"Newcastle fans wanted to come to our game first and then go over to Arsenal for their first team's game but unfortunately that couldn't happen because of the police.

"That would have added to the crowd but hopefully there'll still be a decent crowd there and we'd like Millwall fans to come and see the players coming through our system."

Skinner says that Ian Holloway's faith in young players has been a major boost to the club's academy.

"The manager has been really receptive to trying out the youngsters," he said.

"Fred Onyedinma, Aiden O'Brien and Jack Powell have all done well so we're hopeful that there will be a conveyor belt of players coming through.

"They have got a stepping stone into the first team and it also encourages young players to come to Millwall.

"If they see a route into the first team they're more inclined to come to us than the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal. It helps on all fronts.

"It's been great that the manager has put young players in there – it gives the academy staff added incentive to work hard and make sure they're prepared.

"The manager has been fantastic in wanting to take the players for training – he stays on a Thursday afternoon to work with the youth team and the U21s.

"That's so he can implement his way of thinking into their young minds. With Neil Harris managing the U21s, there's a link between us and the first team as well.

"A lot of the boys have had a chance in the U21s this year so it's looking healthy down the ladder.

"The system and the structure that the manager wants has been very evident in our games – that hasn't turned into results but the way they're playing gives us great hope."

Tickets are on general sale priced at £10 adults and £5 U16s in the Executive Lounge, plus £5 adults and £1 U16s in the Barry Kitchener Stand Lower. Tickets will also be available to purchase on Saturday. Details here.

It's great to see our promising youngsters play, even more so that Mr Holloway is willing to give them a go rather than spending out on big wages for older experienced players.
