Holloway insists door hasn't closed on Millwall midfield duo

JIMMY Abdou and Richard Chaplow can force their way back into the Millwall reckoning if they perform well in training, manager Ian Holloway has said.

The midfield duo were notable absentees from the squad that travelled to Bournemouth last weekend, with 20-year-old Jack Powell selected ahead of them.

They instead played for the Lions' U21 side against Ipswich on Friday. Abdou and Chaplow are among the 24 Millwall players with contracts that expire in the summer.

Holloway explained: "I told them they wouldn't be in the squad for Saturday so they played for the U21s instead.

"I didn't want to take extra senior pros down to Bournemouth and then not name them as substitutes.

"They both accepted it in the right manner, like I knew they would, and I haven't closed any doors.

"If they’re performing better than anyone else, I'll bring them back into the squad.

"My job is to get us to win, pure and simple, so I'll include whoever's impressing me.

"Last Saturday, I felt Powell deserved to come into the squad – if Chaplow and Abdou want to fight their way back in, they have the power to do that.

"I'm here to make decisions that benefit the club so whoever plays best is going to get in there."

Williams and Upson have made that their position, only injuries will get Jimmy(MFC legend) and Chaplow(big wages) near to the first team as Powell is also ahead of them now

I would like to see Jimmy stick around, doubt his wages are astronomical and he can always be called upon when playing a team which goes through an attacking playmaker away from home. Think he deserves a place in the squad for at least another couple of seasons. Can also be a bit of a role model for the youngsters for what he has been through in his career, signed as a free agent, goes onto become club legend despite what he went through with his son and the fact people always seem to underestimate him. LEGEND

Jimmy, I have time for him any day over Upson & Chaplow. Chaplow has always been baggage, as he lasts One game and is injured, until the next outing, get rid,

Jimmy has always been consistant for Millwall, not great on the technical side, but positioning awareness is fantastic and his passing is better than it used to be...he has always been committed and has always been willing to improve, a trait that is missing from a few footballers these days. I personally would like to give him an anchor role if Ollie plays 5 across the middle.

This article says that there are 24 Players out of contract in the Summer. A previous article said it was 20 and an article before that 17. Can anyone confirm the exact number and who they are?

I would play jimmy alongside Williams with upson as the attacking midfielder. No room for ex strikers to play in midfield play them up front where they belong.

Holloway has ended up with a squad that comprises too many midfield players of the same if not very similar offering + some younsters some of whome are now out on loan.
But when it comes to forwards there is nowhere near enough to choose from - its hardly the players fault - that the squad has ended up how it is - its Hoilloways, a situation now made even worse that it appears to have finally dawned on him that we need 2 up front.

what im very surprised that Olly has not been able to attract any quality players on loan very worrying we have after all in the past attracted the likes of Kane , Townesend and even Glen Johnson . As for Jimmy not getting in the team we always seem to play better when he is involved but I understand he may not always start a game Chaplow should go always bloody injured and Jimmy should stay as quality back up

Love Jimmy but feel that he will struggle to get ahead of any of our current first team squad. Upson and Williams are class and Powell is coming through whilst looking like a quality player with all the potential in the World. Would love to comment on Martinez...but the bloke never got on the pitch, any idea why we signed the guy all the way from Spain? He potentially could play the attacking midfield role but with MacD playing out of his skin I wouldn't want to drop the guy in such great form.
