Charlton goalkeeper praises Millwall counterpart Forde

CHARLTON goalkeeper Nick Pope revealed his admiration for Millwall's David Forde after the south London derby finished goalless on Saturday.

Pope, 22, was drafted into the Addicks side at The Valley after first-choice stopper Stephen Henderson pulled out of the squad with a shoulder injury.

The young shot-stopper made several routine saves to keep the Lions at bay but it was his opposite number Forde who faced the most serious test of the afternoon.

In the 94th minute, Charlton striker George Tucudean lifted the ball over Forde, who stood his ground, before Byron Webster and Alan Dunne cleared the danger.

"It was good goalkeeping by Fordey – he came out quickly," said Pope. "By the time George turned round he was faced up to him. It was good goalkeeping more than bad finishing.

"I was nearly at the half-way line when George took his first touch and there were four or five bodies off the bench. It just needed a little bit more. It was unfortunate.

"Fordey had a really good game on Saturday and was probably one of their best players. For a young goalkeeper like me coming up he's a great example."

Pope revealed he'd been given a warm reception by the 3,000 Millwall fans when he took lined up in front of the away end at the start of the second half.

"I got called one particular word a number of times, which was rather naughty," he said.

"But it's something as a goalkeeper you enjoy. When I've been on loan and there's less people you hear every word they say.

"When there's a few thousand it's just a blur that comes out and you hear the odd word.

"But I enjoy it and you just brush it off. They are there to put you off and I know that as I've sat in that stand before. It's just a laugh."

I think he's after a move to play in front of proper support instead of a bunch of girls

@block 28: He clearly wants to learn from one of the best in the league, which makes that Henderson sound proper sh*te.... Henderson was only injured because he would have got it 10x worse having been on-loan from West Spam and playing for Charlton... doesn't get much worse does it?

At 22 years of age he looks a good prospect - I would like to see him at Millwall.
