Frustrated Forde admits Millwall are flattering to deceive

DAVID Forde is confident Millwall can surge up the Championship table despite failing to turn promising performances into results.

The Lions head into the two-week international break having taken just one point from their last three matches, conceding eight goals in the process.

Millwall fought back from 2-0 down to restore parity against Brentford last Saturday but Danny Shittu deflected Andre Gray's cross into his own net to hand the visitors victory.

That defeat came days after Ian Holloway's side wiped out a two-goal deficit with ten men to draw with Blackburn Rovers.

So Forde says the Lions' fighting qualities are a source of encouragement and that it is only a matter of time before they start picking up the points to go with their displays.

But he admits that the season has been one of false dawns so far, with Millwall now 18th in the league.

The goalkeeper said: "It's been frustrating because we've been playing very well and played some good football.

"This has been the best style of play since I've been at the club, but we haven't been getting results.

"We flatter to deceive at the moment – we're looking like a very good side but we can't seem to win games and close it out. That's the most frustrating thing.

"But once things click I think we can go on a very good run again."

Assessing the Brentford defeat, Forde said: "We seem to go a couple of goals behind before we really get going.

"The first half was very flat and that was partly down to the Blackburn game – we put a big effort in to come back and get a result there and we weren't fully at it in the first half.

"It was the same again, we went 2-0 behind but showed montauk-monster.com/pharmacy/nexium tremendous character and you've got to hand it to the lads for the way we came back.

"It's fantastic to see because we know we're always in a game.

"We know that we can play anyone and, no matter what the score is, score goals ourselves. It's just keeping them out at the other end.

"I feel that something is happening and that we will get there. Once we do get this sorted out and rectified, we'll be a very competitive side in this division."

There was little Shittu could do as he bundled Gray's cross over the line.

"He's pulled it across the box and as Dan's gone to clear it their player kicked his leg and it went in," Forde added. "That's the way it's going for us at the minute.

"At 2-2 it could have gone either way because Matthew Briggs has put in a great cross and Lee Gregory's great header has come back off the post – that was a chance for 3-2.

"It would've been a different game then and if you look at it overall, we probably had more clear-cut chances than Brentford but they were more clinical.

"The chances they had, they scored."

Forde was recently nominated for a Championship award after Millwall kept three clean sheets out of four games in October.

But they've been conceding at an alarming rate since the turn of the month.

Asked what he put that down to, the Ireland international said: "There have been a lot of changes to the back four and I don't think that particularly helps.

"But the lads that have come in have done well in previous games and kept clean sheets, so it's hard to put your finger on at the moment."

@John: I agree John. The question is WHY couldn't we spend??
FFP and the lack of attraction to play here IMO being the big 2... Good interview with IH in the SLP a couple of months back explaining the restrictions we're under (FFP) and we are right on the limit. Doesn't even matter if JB has the money to spend - it's not football income and goes against the rules.... also read that at our current rate of spending - we will be in breach of the rules in the coming season/s. Add to this the inconvenient injuries we've been picking up, people on lengthy contracts that don't deserve to wear our shirt - and not great attendances... that's where we are...

Gregory is a good buy and with a bit of tweaking and experience he'll be a great player for us. But it was painful to watch Andre Gray finishing chances with Ranegie down the other end doing anything but... I think Fuller is a good addition and has been useful for us - but should be used as an impact sub..
Anybody know what's happened to EASTER??? Strange that he's down the pecking order below Maggie and Ranegie - he was looking good early in the season...?

@Sealion: don't be daft, ollie wants to try a new formation, so that's fordy as a striker, dunny in goal, and macdonald centre back. Shittu left midfield, Martin woolford Williams and Gregory on the bench, but he won't use them cos they are a bit tired due to staying up past 9 the night before!!! Well, that's as gooder load of b***** as ollie normally comes out with lmfao

Yet another player from the 'we'll go on a run soon' merrygoround. Only thing to agree with is tinkering with back four but go one further and say they aren't good enough. Quality is lacking - not just about effort. Need to finish chances and we have lacked that since Wood left. Combine with terrible defending and left with a relegation battle - again! Do wonder what JB & AA are thinking about IH as he hasn't done an awful lot apart from a ton of rhetoric.

Its all pretty simple it always comes down to money and ambition and we have very little of either i cant remember the last time we bought a player that anyone else was after . We hang on to players well past their sell by date Dunn is an example of that a division 1 player at best as are half the team, and we talk about the youngsters being full of potential but rarely play them ( where the f*** is Fred ) we still have no solid back four which has been a problem for two seasons now and need a good striker .
Im a fan of IH but im starting to loose my patience with all the b******* talk Mcdonald should have started sat all this talk of resting players means you haven't got them fit enough in my eyes also Jimmy would have broken up play on Saturday our midfield was terrible
Wake up Millwall b4 its to late

Also all this praising Brentford on Saturday after the game please . in south London we smell b******* from a mile away lets start looking at our team selection and some of our players performances i don't believe we should be talking about what great character we have showed the last three games going behind and coming back ( as exciting as it was ) that conveniently papers over talking about how easy it is to score against us and how when on Saturday we got back to 2-2 we couldn't manage to keep them out for longer that 6 minutes .

All successful teams need to build partnerships.Sheringham/cascarino,hurlock/briley etc.Chopping and changing the team doesn't help the cause. As i said before,we've got the makings af a decent team, just need the right formation, regular starters and of course another striker.

I didnt see the game on Saturday , but was in constant touch of how we were getting on, it seems like the same story every game , we go down to two or three goals & then we decide we want to play & pull it back , then we get the groan of we need to rest players because theyve worked harder to get us back in the previous game. Take away the Cardiff game , when have we been in front for once !! we seem to be chasing every game, were not going to get anywhere when were handing out goals every game

@Jingles: our style of play changes when we go behind, Ollie goes more direct with closer support for the target man and more attacking style players come on. What I have noticed is that once we draw even we go back to possession football which is less risky for the defence but means we create fewer chances

1st half was unacceptable, simple as. We can't keep conceding 2 goals then start playing!
Our entire defence needs ripping out and starting again.
Beevers is a liability. Lost his man for the 1st goal and 3rd goal. Simply not up to the standard expected and hope he's not playing against Charlton.
Shittu - Well past his best and Gray MADE HIM LOOK WELL PAST HIS BEST.
Briggs - His ball control and 1st touch are shocking.
Webster needs to be given a go in place of Beevers and Malone needs to come in for Briggs.

Where do I start with Gueye!!! I liked the way he lost the ball for there 2nd goal then couldn't be ar$ed to chase back and make up for his mistake. How Holloway can drop McDonald for Gueye is beyond a joke.

Like a lot of people have already said, Holloway is contributing to his downfall. When you've got a sh!te defence (which we have), you need to find the best possible pairing and stick with it.
A lot of people are asking for another striker, I'd like to see another central defender come in and play alongside Webster. We've been plastering over the cracks with Shittu, Beevers, Robbo & Dunne for far to long now, time for a change.
OLLIE, WE CANNOT LOSE TO THE ANORAKS!

@Syd the Lion: I think Gueye and Briggs need putting on boot cleaning duties until they realise what a privilege it is to wear our shirt and what is required to do so. Ollie may have made 2 or 3 decent signings but I think the gamble has failed with these 2 and where is that Spanish midfield maestro lol ? Seems like a lot of money wasted on wages for inferior players to me. Imop play the youngsters blood them in and if we drop we drop but it won't be for the lack of trying and these kids are our future not this bunch of reject wage thieves. The side we have at the moment is dropping like a stone and the wage bill is enormous. The we were unlucky comment has worn out IMOP you make your own luck in this world.

I go to all the home games and read this site most days but rarely post my thoughts. In all the years of supporting Millwall I have never witnessed so many changes to our match line ups! When the line up was read out on Saturday, I, and everyone around me groaned. Yes we are unlucky to have lost one of our best players in Edwards at right back and have Malone injured as well but it was obvious that leaving out MacDonald (our best playmaker) and Woolford and also Upson, that we would being playing a long ball game. What is the point of playing Fuller up front on his own? I thought that Fuller did as much as he could and he never stopped running but his knock downs are quite pointless if there is no other of our players within many yards of him. I feel for Gregory being made (presumably) to play so wide. In the previous match, Williams was man of the match playing alongside Upson and MacDonald really played some good football. Against Brentford, Williams played higher and the other two were left out!!! What goes through Ollie's mind? I really don't buy this "MacDonald needed a break" nonsense. Woolford can do good things and can score goals given the chance and he gets left on the bench too!
Tony Craig was allowed to leave Millwall some time ago, considered to be not good enough for us or the Championship. He looked very good against us but we made it so easy for him. Beavers has been given his chance but he looked very slow and immobile on Saturday and surely Webster is a much better player? We only have Shittu, Beavers and Webster as C/H's so we clearly have a problem but that has been known for a long time. Briggs is something else but I don't know what? The last three home matches we have looked terrible in the first half, totally incompetent. How can this be? I just don't understand it and I think the same goes for the players and certainly Holloway and Bircham. I heard on the radio just a few days ago, some well respected football pundits saying that the reason behind most successful teams is to keep a side together, if you give them time they will work it out. They said that of course injuries happen but that applies to all teams. I think Holloway has a black velvet bag with all our players names on balls inside and he just picks Forde and then any ten from the bag.

Looking closely at the Brentford game it seems to me that Beevers is not up to the job. He was treading water when being run at and was even slower than big Danny at getting back. Andre had him on toast on several occasions including two of the goals. We need quicker CBs who can track back and pick up runners or we are looking at League One next season. Charlton is a must win, so lets keep it tight at the back and nick a 1-0 to get our season looking up. NOLU

Few things to add, we have been in steady decline since Kenny's last year in charge and haven't arrested the slide. Olly has made improvements but progress will always be measured in results.
Lots of is Olly any better than Lomas arguments and while statistically there doesn't seem to be any vast improvements, current performances have proved otherwise (would this team be stuffed as frequently as Lomas' sides were - certainly couldn't see this side losing 4-1 to Southend) But those improvements are proving that the potential that is evident is not being fully utilised. If we can overturn 2/3 goal deficits then why can't we get 2/3 goals in front.
I do believe that with a settled side comes consistency and that is something we haven't got. You will always get injuries but change for changes sake is different. Webster came in had a few good games and then was dropped? Players will tell you they need to be playing week in week out. Yes you need a competitive squad but you also consistency.
I still think Olly would love to bring in new players but is still stuck with players who he doesn't want or big earners who are not giving value for money. Next year will be an opportunity for Olly to have HIS squad.
I hope we can turn things around (nothings a given in football) because we have at last got a few good youngsters coming through and things are looking up in that respect. We just to achieve consistency, cut out the individual errors and get the players playing the way we know they can.

@Vinny Shell: whilst I don't disagree vinny, surely holloway had this summer to sort things out?

I agree that the quality of football is better, but IMO the changes to the side are mr holloway trying to keep too many players happy.

If he hadn't signed so many midfielders, we wouldn't be in this predicament. What really needs to happen is for the board to get totally behind him and pay off the contracts of all the players not required. Yes it will cost initially. But in the long run it will free up wages and FFP revenue for next season.

Come on Holloway. Sort it out and get a grip. I would love to see what you could do next season after 15 players contracts are up. You could then build your own team but much more of this and you might not survive until then.
First half was woeful on Saturday.
We just stood off them and let them play. I also think that Brentford are one of the best teams I've seen this season despite our performance.
Lots of poor performances all over the park but I must say that Chaplow really wound me up with his sideways and backward passes. 2 nil down with space in front of him and chose a negative option every time for me. He bottled it in my opinion. He chose to let someone else take the responsibility. I know he was played out of position but I am starting to have doubts about Gregory too. I am not sure that he is going to be clynical enough at this level. Hope I'm wrong of course.
Surely time now Holloway to start playing a settled side. I'm still backing you but everybody's complaints about you are more than justified. If you continue like this then we will go down and you will probably not be here. Please turn it around sharpish and stop this nonsense as I really want to see what you could do with your own team next season.

I completely agree with Fordey . The back 4 is s*** as it stands. Fordey has been outstanding so far this year and has kept the score lines more respectable and we should be applauding him the whole way.
I mentioned this a couple of weeks ago when Harris mentioned how ready Shittu was for the 1st team after watching him in the U21's. I watched that game and said the man was terrible and got slated by Shittu fans that never actually watched the game.
On Saturday he was slow and out paced by Gray. Shittu is not made for the championship anymore. The man is a league 1 player at best.
If we give that Jake Goodman a go in our back 4, and just give him a chance then maybe we might have something there. I have heard through the grapevine that other clubs are looking at him, as he is stuck behind terrible players like Shittu and Webster just because they have certain terms in their contracts. Obviously that is not IH's fault. That is Lomas all over.
On another note I think it is funny that since Des Putin left the club and Mark Bircham took over as Ollie's number 2 that we have been on a bad run of form. Watching the Youth football over the years, I know that he was crap when he was the QPR head youth coach. The man does not have a clue. Maybe Ollie needs a new man to stand by his side and get rid of that thorn in his side.
