Millwall manager encourages attackers to shoot on sight

IAN Holloway wants his players to follow Martyn Woolford's lead and shoot on sight.

Holloway says Millwall need to have more efforts on goal after hitting the target just four times against Watford at the weekend.

Woolford worked an opening by cutting inside a defender and finishing instinctively into the bottom corner.

And Holloway, whose side takes on Blackburn this evening, has encouraged the Lions to pull the trigger whenever shooting opportunities present themselves.

Woolford was found in the box by Scott McDonald's clever through ball.

"That was the right pass," said Holloway. "We could have gone wide to Lee Martin but there was an opporunity and Scott took it.

"From there it was a great litle turn and strike. For me, one jink and a shot makes sense – not two, three or four turns and then a shot.

"We have got to work a bit of space and get a shot in straight away because we're not doing that enough. We're not hitting the target enough.

"We had one more shot than Watford but only four of our 11 attempts were on target.

"That's a point for me to look at as a coach."

Holloway added that he has been pleased with the recent form of striker Ricardo Fuller, who will lead the line again tonight.

"We're learning how to use Riccy," he said. "I brought him off the other day because he was on a yellow card and I couldn't risk him getting sent off.

"We're finding him and giving him the ball a lot more. Our organisation and coordination up front is coming but we need to get more shots in."

It's gonna be hard for us to out score their front line so hopefully another Home clean sheet will help us.

However, here's the depressing stat of the week:

Millwall haven't won at home, in the league, in a midweek game, since the 17th September 2013, in Steve Lomas' first competitive win as Millwall manager...
