Trialist Chris Eagles told to earn his wings with Millwall

MILLWALL will not offer trialist Chris Eagles a contract unless he can prove that he is fit enough to start playing immediately.

Eagles’s three-day stint with the Lions will come to an end after training this morning, leaving boss Ian Holloway to weigh up whether the winger has done enough to earn a deal.

The former Manchester United star has been a free agent since turning down contract talks at Bolton in the summer but has been keeping fit in a boxing gym.

"I'm delighted Chris wanted to come in and train," Holloway told the Southwark News.

"Bolton said to him: 'if you don’t sign, you’re not playing', so he was frozen out.

"I'm helping him get fit and seeing where he is. If I like what I see then there might be a chance to do something. He's showing me what he’s got but it's very, very early days.

"He certainly isn't fit enough to be involved against Huddersfield and that’s all I'm concerned with at the moment – the game on Saturday is all we're talking about.

"We'll be in a strong position [to sign Eagles] if he likes my way of playing, how I talk to him and if he wants to get in my team.

"He's done pretty well so far – in training and in the runs that my lads do.

"We'll see how his body responds to that because that run really does wipe you out. After three days with us, we'll see where he is fitness-wise and how far away he is.

"I'm not going to take anybody who can't play now. Chris has got to show me how well he's dealt with our training because it's very difficult.

'I'm very wary, having seen what happened to Carlos Edwards in an innocuous tackle, of Chris getting injured in one of my sessions because what happens to him then?"

a no lose situation for us. Not sure about this man's attitude, but sometimes a month trail contract can be a good idea. He must now be desperate to play again and may have learned from the school of hard knocks?

What I can't understand is why no other clubs have come in for him , and why did bolton let him leave as he was one of there better players , he always turned it on against us when he played for bolton , says he as been keeping fit in a boxers gym that's miles diffrent training what u do at football training , just hope ih makes the right decision and not have another Hoyte on our books .

@John: There may be issues there, but probably he just didn't fit into the way they want to play. Why did Ipswich let Edwards go, or whoever had Lee Martin (can't remember) let him go? It isn't always about the player.

@John: also let Edwards go. Which suggests anyone being released from Ipswich is worth a look!

Just sign him up. We know what he can do and He's got to be good for 45 mins against hudds then he can work his way in to the starting 11 as he gets fitter.

Eagles is a good player, at 28 years old and what I've seen of him this could really turn out to be a good move for both party's, fingers crossed he can turn it on and start getting some crosses into the box for are strikers.

Not sure what we have to lose, we know he can play, seems to like the Den as he always does well against us, and I kind of like his attitude, especially as he will be on our side, and the fans behind him for once. Ollie is a good man manager, it seems, at 28 and out of the game for a while it may have dawned on him the world is not rushing to his doorstep so he could be just the thing.

So holloway doesn't want to sign someone that ain't fit. What about Gueye. Fuller. Martinez & Gregory not to mention the loan players. Sounds like he's making excuses not to sign him. Maybe someone has told him we can't afford him.

I think he would be a good signing, but I would really like to see Gueye in from the start, everytime he comes on we look such a different more attacking side, also now Gregorys up and about he needs more than the last 10mins or so give him a shot, once he gets his first they will start flowing, This boy could EVENTUALLY be the striker we're looking for but he needs to be given a fair crack....

@DELBOY64: there might be a method in ollys madness..Martinez told mfc that he was fit prior to us getting him ..this was a lie.AM was no where near fit.so perhaps he's making sure..cos he wants a winger to walk straight into the 1st team.

Barring injury, do you think we getting closer to finding out our best lineup and Ollie putting them on the pitch and allowing them to become settled? I don't get to see the games live so it's hard to judge what goes on but seems like we chop and change a lot. The Edwards injury looks like a blow not just from a skill angle but mainly the leadership he seemed to be offering. Anyway, hope we can get back on track and start banking some more 3 point games.

@grassgrower: As I said on another post Grassgrower I would really like to see a more settled team. Lucky enough to be able to go to all home games and it seems to me that there is a really, and I really mean a very good team, in there waiting to get out. We have not had Bailey which has been a loss and Gregory has not had a run in the team for reasons we can actually only guess at. I thought Ranegie was a good addition big strong forward but he does not seem to have a dominance in the air that you would expect and we seem to have a midfield bursting with talent much more than I have seen down the Den for a long while, such that it is very hard to pick out who should NOT play. If we could, and at the moment that seems a way off, get forwards scoring we would be a match for anybody and the good part is that who ever is introduced to the match seem to know what they are actually doing, there is a real shape to the team that everybody has bought into. The football is also much more attractive to watch and it also seems to me that there is a real team spirit about the place certainly the crowd are as noisy as ever, a sure sign that the team are not only playing well they are giving 100%. Losing Edwards is a big big blow he was a rock but when Jimmy went to RB the guys I sit with all said what is Ollie doing but Jimmy was MOM and there multi-million pound winger was no longer a danger, a most remarkable performance. Dunny has also been reborn in the center mid position I can think of two off the line saves three if you count the one Saturday where Forde actually had it covered I think. Sorry if I have gone on a bit but it is important that those who cannot get to games not get the impression from some on this site it is doom and gloom far from it, I think if we can keep this going the starting eleven will emerge if we go on a bit of a run, the good news is if there are injuries, suspensions or the need for sub's to change things during a game the bench is as strong as it has ever been, a couple of quid, or dollars in your case, on us going up next year may just be a very good investment.

A lot of people are saying he's got attitude problems. But there's nothing in his post to suggest he has. What we the fans need is holloway to tell us why he ain't playing him then we will all know the apple & move on.

Eagles is a decent player with decent skills. Bolton pushed him out cos he wouldn't sign a new contract, so obviously he can still offer something. Sign him up Ollie ffs we need quality cover right now. If he struggles with our 'boot camp' early on, use him as a super sub to try and turn games around. Nothing ventured, nothing gained in my book.
