Etherington on Millwall's radar as Pennant cuts trial short

IAN Holloway's search for a new winger could lead to contract talks with former Stoke City star Matthew Etherington.

NewsAtDen understands Etherington is on Holloway's radar after another possible target, Jermaine Pennant, chose to cut-short his trial stint at The Den.

Millwall are in the market for a wide midfielder and saw a deal for Huddersfield Town’s Sean Scannell collapse on transfer deadline day.

But Etherington, a free agent after being released by the Potters, could now fit the bill.

The 33-year-old held discussions with "three or four" Premier League clubs in the summer but failed to secure a move that would have kept him in the top flight.

With England's elite clubs now unable to add to their squads until January, Etherington is prepared to step down a division – and would be keen on joining the Lions.

The emergency loan window opened in the Football League this week but Millwall are also allowed to sign players permanently if they are unattached.

Holloway has spoken to Etherington’s agent and is now considering whether to take his interest in the ex-Tottenham and West Ham man any further.

"I've got some room to add to the squad if I want to," Holloway said. "I'm getting all sorts of people ringing me up – quality players – asking to come to Millwall.

"I've got an idea mulling through my head at the moment and I'm weighing that up."

Pennant, who is also without a club after being let go by Stoke, began training with Millwall before the international break.

If Ollie thinks he can do a job for us and he signs who cares if he s***** all his wages at the bookies that's up to him, I am sure Ollie is only looking short term with him as soon as January comes around he will try to get a deal with someone in the bottom 3 of the Premiership.

Unsure about this one..vermin connections apart, thought he was a decent player, lots of pace and trickery but could still do a job at our level. Will all depend on his attitude and how fit he is, might be a short term answer until the end of the season, I suppose we should trust Ollie's judgment.

Would still like to him go in for Scannell again in January...

If they were and did make an app which I'm sure they would of been delighted at the time would anyone on here want to give em verbal abuse and 'coin' em just because they played for a bunch of wanxers once upon a time, I'm pretty sure we've all worked for a wanxer before and had to put up with it remember to 70% of footballers it's just a job.

Give McDonald a free role up front. His movement and skill will pay dividends over a season. He will score twenty given the starts! As for Etherington? If his agent is running his career, ...then p*** off and stop wasting Ollie's time!

Firstly I'm amazed at Pennant and he's agent. Hasn't had a club for god knows how long, varies problems off the field, we allow him to train with us (FOR FREE) and now they've got the balls to demand this and that. Well there's the door 'F##K OFF'.
Not sure about Etherington, another player well past his best. Keep looking Ollie, must be another young Townsend out there we can get on loan.

I would rather just use our kids get them experience, old has been's or youngsters from another club do nothing.
What incentive is there to join our club as a 10-11 year old if you know that when you get to 16-17 you wont get a game because we favour 18 year old's from Tottenham and Arsenal?
If our club gets a name for being a club prepared to throw youngsters in and get experience we may attract better kids who know they will get to play.

The biggest problem with keep signing these type of ageing players is in my view its short sighted because in all probability they are not gona get us promoted. In order for us to be competitive with the bigger clubs in the division is to spend money.Ok so we don't have no money so the only way to get money is to have saleable assets i.e young exiting players, there are players being sold from this division for multiple millions, when was the last time a premier league club came calling for one of ours Tim Cahill? Yes Carlos Edwards has been a great signing no two ways about it but he will soon be retired and we will still be where we are or worse in the div below! The only way for our beloved club to progress is to develop our young talent and sell them on for huge profit and then reinvest in the squad at a higher level then we currently are.

I'm sorry but I just don't understand this pathetic obsession with West Ham.......it's so childish!!.......I support Millwall....if a player signs for Millwall I don't give a f**k who he used to play for - it's completely irrelevant - it's what he does for the Lions that bothers me. Personally I've always hated the surrey scumbags more amyway, but the same thing applies.....if one of their ex players signs for us I'll congratulate him on seeing the light and support him every time he pulls on a blue shirt

for someone like Etherington it really doesn't bother me. played for a couple of clubs before joining them, has been away from them as long as he was there. However someone like Noble who kisses the badge grown up there, loves em, family loves em, declares undying love for them then that'd probably be a no, and saying that if he was that much of a supporter we'd be 1 club he wouldn't want to join.

I've seen enough journeymen at Millwall, and I don't want to see too many more. Whilst I have nothing against Pennant or Etherington, I simply don't get excited by the prospect of their like being at Millwall. I don't see how they improve our current squad.

we are so midfield heavy at the moments, maybe we should just stop trying to get more in until we have shifted a few out, financial fair play says we cant afford them unless we start filling the ground week in week out.

Another Snr Pro in midfield who will get upset if he isn't playing, I also bet he isn't cheap. Carlos Edwards worked out but he is the exception to the rule, we need to invest in younger players.

People are saying they don't understand why we hate west ham well we started on the isle of dogs & was looked down on by the scum. Then we moved south & was instantly disliked by them for leaving the darkside. The fighting between the dockers lasted years. Sons & daughters were brought up to hate the kunts. Then one of our own died at new cross. & some people call it childish obsession. It has always been us & them & always will be.

@block 28: @block 28: I come from a long line of dockers who supported millwall and most of them fought among them selves,i dont go for all the hatred thing because of all the grief it brings, the biggest tragedy being the youngster that died at new cross, just wish we could turn the clock back and the young man could still be with us.
I have many west ham fans as mates and not one of them agrees with the so called hatred that exists between many of the fans from both sides, yes we give each other stick with the banter between us,but hatred no way.
