ANGEL Martinez had his mind set on joining Millwall after receiving a phone call from boss Ian Holloway.
The former Blackpool midfielder has revealed that Tangerines chairman Karl Oyston wanted him to sign a new contract.
But Martinez turned down the chance to stay at Bloomfield Road, as well as an offer from hometown team Girona, to link up with Holloway, who first brought him to England.
And the Spaniard insists he is fully fit and determined to help maintain Millwall's impressive start to the season.
"I was at Blackpool for three years and the connection I had with the fans was fantastic." Martinez said.
"The chairman sent me a message about keeping me there but I know that they are trying to save money and at the same time build a new team with a new manager.
"Everything was difficult as you can see by their start to the season – they are losing every match.
"Hopefully that changes and they start to get some points but it is a very difficult situation.
"I've had one eye on Blackpool because it's been my home but the situation is not the best so when Ollie called and offered me a contract, my mind was focused on joining Millwall."
Martinez trained with Spanish Segunda division side Girona after leaving Blackpool.
He said: "That's where I’m from and the club is in my city. They're a very good professional team.
"I know the manager and the players there; they tried to keep me but there was no chance of that happening! But thanks to them I’m fit and my mind is clear.
“When you are at home and you have no team, you can go for a run or to the gym but it's not the same as playing with a team.”
Millwall travel to Ipswich Town this weekend and Martinez, who is looking to earn a place in Holloway’s XI, has given fans an insight into what they can expect from him.
"I can be defensive or attacking," he explained.
"I like to drop deep, get the ball and get it forward.
"I like to arrive late in the box. I can play everywhere in midfield really but I like to keep possession.
"I love the ball. But I can play another type of football because I am aggressive and I like to fight, so my game is quite complete.
"You need to defend and attack in midfield, and I can do both. I'm ready to get into the team and fight for my place."
