As it happened: Scannell eludes Millwall on deadline day

MILLWALL are hoping to strengthen their squad on the final day of the transfer window, which closes at 11pm tonight.

A deal for Huddersfield winger Sean Scannell is in the balance and could go right to the wire but an agreement has been reached with former Blackpool midfielder Angel Martinez.

Manager Ian Holloway, who last week took his total of summer signings to seven with a loan deal for Mathias Ranegie, would be willing to trim his squad before the deadline.

Of our summer signings of 7 only Fuller started on Saturday. Is that not strange? All those signings but none good enough to start except one? I was looking at the same team that ended last season starting on Saturday so I am not sure why we have this elevated expectation for this season. We haven't played anyone in the top ten yet and when we do I think we will see we haven't changed all that much from last season. I think there is work to be done today!

@Glasshalffull: Edwards was one of the 7 and started. Webster, Guaye and Ranegie all came on and Briggs and Gregory were unused subs. That's all seven in the match day squad. While I agree the starting 11 is basically the same as last year, our cover players are far better now and I'd be happy to see any of those 7 starting a match. Our squad overall is better than last year. The way we are playing is also a lot better. Don't think promotion is realistic but relegation seems unlikely which to me is an improvement.

@Glasshalffull: if it is the same as the last eight games of the season would be very happy with that. I think we can all see that the team is in much better shape than last and no one can now say that Ollie does not know what he is doing. From the results so far, if we keep this form, we will be safe in another twenty matches with over another twenty left, which at the start of the season is all most of us wanted, personally I think will will keep getting better as the new style of play is understood, and with a half decent striker who knows.

Martinez would be a good addition, not so sure about Scannell. The other question is who is on the way out? Chaplow and Shittu seem good bets to me.

I'd like to see scannell signed and this Martinez if he does the job. Also wouldn't mind a shock signing where Millwall have pulled their finger out and managed to get someone like James Hansen or Kyle Vassell, maybe even Cahill. Okay I'm dreaming now.

We only play 1 up front so cannot see us going for a Striker, plus this time last year we had a great attacking line up but went 8 games without a win.... very different this time around.

I'd like to see some leave today, Josh Wright 100% because of Jack Powell, Shittu, O'Brien (Loan), Goodman (Loan).

I'm unsure about Fred, he could be worth a go in the 1st team but it's such a long season and we always get injuries at some point (just our luck) and Fred isn't bad to have as a good squad player!!

Do you honestly believe that Burnley would be interested in Shittu if he couldn't get into the Millwall team?? Don't get me wrong would be great to let them have him, but just can't see it.

As for Hanson, we don't have a spare £1mil spare.

@Bradders: I hear that shittu is liked by Dyche and has experience in premier league, just because Holloway doesn't like him don't mean someone else can't, as for Hanson they have told Millwall they want 750k that would be all of Millwall's budget from what I hear, so are negotiating! Well the person who told me is friends with a few if the Millwall players

Look at how slow Shittu is now... I reckon he could have done it in the prem around 2/3 years ago but not now!

@Longfield Lion: He also says that he needs cover if Martin or Wooly get injured but what happens if Ranegie or Fuller gets a knock or ban. Fuller can't manage 90mins as it is and we lose Ranegie in January so in my opinion we do still need a striker, one that Ollie will pick.

Anyone can put in a quality cross with practice and a good overlap. We seem a bit hung up on bringing in wingers. Get Carlos and Malone doing crossing drills after training to stick them on Ric and Mat's heads.

No more strikers today I think. Fuller, Ranegie, Gregory (can be called back if out on loan), and only one up front, probably more than enough. Also, our budget to compete with other clubs is tiny, so why does anyone think we are going to get a miracle goal machine? Less than 10k crowd on Saturday says it all.

No not Pennant, we have just spent a long time weeding out the trouble makers and bad attitude cases. Pennant has been trouble all through his career and he is not good enough now to take the risk. The squad seems harmonious at the moment and we don't want Bertie big b***** rocking the boat and showing the kids how not to do it.

    Loan window opens next week.
It would not surprise me if Olly has a few possible
options up his sleeve with PL players.
    He's a crafty old fox.

We seem to have a team of midfielders. Perhaps Ollies philosophy is to keep the ball for hours and when the opponents fall asleep from abject boredom we sneak into the box and score the winner. Works for me.

I'd like to see us sign Murray but don't think we could afford his wages. The whole September deadline day thing is a bit of a Sky Sports circus isn't it? Looks like Huddersfield have done to us with Scannell what we did to Bolton with Feeney. Still wouldn't be surprised if he ends up with us on loan before long - depending on what happens with their manager. Pleased with Martinez though, he could be just what we need to turn our possession into goals and maybe even get Gregory going...

Berylson wont be taken for a mug and Holloway knows what he needs to complete the jigsaw. Premier clubs will need to loan out players and thats when Holloway will get his way. No need to panic buy for the sake of it. There is a decent team being built slowly but surely we will get the finished article.

The only player where we have gone in with confirmed cash seems to be Scannell and that was 300k max. We might be sitting pretty in fifth right now but any dreams of pushing for promotion must surely be put to bed now, even by Holloway's biggest fans. Unless we go crazy in the loan market we will be an also ran team this year but as long as we stay out of trouble that will be a job well done on our budget. COYL

@boblion: indeed. Apparently a target for Ollie all summer.

I think he would have done a job for us but clearly beyond our budget.

Even if we had 500k guess we wouldn't have been able to compete on the wages either.

Perhaps he went there for an easier life.

The Smith situation is a joke. Last week he was honoured to play for a club like Weeds, with a new 3 year contract, and now a Fulham player. Money talks and I bet his wages are huge compared to what we would be able to offer. Becchio is no coup, useless at Norwich, so why don't we give Ranegie a chance to see what he can do, and hope Gregory comes good

Fulham got Smith for an affordable fee, Rotherham got Becchio, a proven goalscorer at this level and who did we get? Neau Juan. Absolute b*******. "Buy when you're on top" and we haven't improved our squad one bit from last season. Becchio much better than Ranegie but our board is so inept we can't sign anyone, not even 2 bob Scannell. Really does my head in. 5 easiest games is the reason we're 5th. It'll all unravel soon with us staying below average and EVERYONE else improving. Not one shred of ambition shown.

By your way of thinking Reading have ended up with a Palace reject and Rotherham have landed a Norwich reject. Have some faith in our manager he has given Jack powell the chance and has improved team in a short space of time.

@Eightieswall: interesting reading all of the comments.

Wonder how many people would moan if we went into receivership again.

        Step back and look at the facts;

gate receipts from 9-10k people per week, of which around 6k are
        Season ticket holder whose
Money was spent before 1st September.

That means we are completely unable to pay the wages the likes of Fulham, Norwich, weeds et al.

If you really want big money signings, then Millwall isn't the place to follow a football team.

        Try shitehurst park.

So where does everybody see us at the end of September? We have four teams in the bottom half to play so if there are posters that believe we are not in a false position then they must be confident of a good month. Personally I think seven points plus would be a good return before we move into a really difficult October. I think we'll be on or around the 20 point mark by the end of October which will put us in or around the top ten with some very winnable games during November, December and January. It just goes to show how important our good start has been.

@lion.ie: Agree it was vital we got points on the board early.Lets be honest we have played teams that are poor and in turmoil (Leeds,Fulham,Blackpool).I just worry how we will do against the stronger teams without a goalscorer.
Cannot see the Watford reserve being the answer,Easter just has not done the business,Gregory it seems there is problems and Fuller just cannot do what has been asked of him.
I will be very surprised looking at the fixtures if we are higher than about two thirds down the table by the end of October.
Martinez scored just 1 goal for Blackpool so hardly seems like a Cahill ?

@Longfield Lion: you got his goal scoring stat right, but you have not mentioned his assist's,also is it not a fact IH is on a longer term mission to get us into the premiership,so with our 10'000 gate's we cannot be chooser's we are begger's,so to all those fan,s that think we should be signing any player on high wage's,i want one question answered WHERE IS THE MONEY COMING FROM,bearing in mind the rubbish player,s on biggish contract,s left behind by Lomas and the so called legend Jacket.
Lets face it this man IH has done fantastic in sorting the mess left behind by those two.
Before the jacket lover's come on to s*** me off,yes he got us to wembley a few times ,yes he got us promotion and i give him a big pat on the back for that.
When he WALKED OUT he left us up to our neck,s in the s***t,so IMO that wiped out all he did that was good.
Some poster,s on here are knocking OLLIE who in my opinion is building a team to get us out of the s**t and into the premiership.
To do this on our gate,s he will be a magician if he get,s us into the premiership.
So keep doing it your way OLLIE it,s going in the right direction .

JB has spent 32 million over 4 years - we're loosing 8m per year at the moment and hence why we can't afford to spend 500k on one player.

@RobsterK: if we can't afford it then why did we bid that amount for Smith? and another £300k+ for Scannell as well

@harryfabian: I'm not sure we bid for both players at same time. If we got Smith I doubt we would have gone for Scannell as well.

Anyway my point was we need to be realistic - we can't keep spending money on transfers if we are loosing £8m per season.

Loving all this talk of Powerpuff millwall fans, coming from a clique of maybe 4 or 5 supporters.
Maybe some of us are too busy to get to every single millwall game, what with having families, jobs, other interests. Football is not everything, guys.
Yes, I watch millwall if theyre on the tv. I like to go to 10 or so games a season, maybe more if we have a cup run. Ive been a millwall fan all my life, but I suppose to you guys im a 'powerpuff supporter' and not a 'true lions fan'.
Might I suggest just appreciating all the millwall fans we do have, rather than try and push them away

@AlMfc: Absolutely spot on!! Ridiculous how some can alienate themselves from other Millwall fans.... trying to be the "bigger and better" fan by not being a Powerpuff!

Like you say we are all Millwall fans and that's all that matters, like you I have supported Millwall all my life and if I didn't live so far away I'd be going every week like I used to, now I take in around 10 home games and 3-4 away games a season as well.

@Jim28: Funny you get the same 15-25 likes just as Buchwacker does and you seem to agree with everything he says, either a brown-nose or something suspicious!!!

Jim I actually like what you have said, but 1 thing you have to realise is that everyones opinion is different.... I might agree with you, you might disagree with me, that's just the way of the world.

Your comment made me laugh - "its the big headed ones that talk on this site & think that what say is the only opinion that counts". Your problem is that if someone sticks up for their opinion, you don't like it, because you think that person shouldn't think that their opinion is the only 1 that counts.... but Jim c'mon it's an opinion, just like your opinion is that persons opinion is wrong, they are all opinions.

You have to realise everyone has different opinions and some will believe in what they are saying a lot more than others..... Just the way of the world so get over it!!!

Hi Jim28, lets try and clear up some of this things being said.............. ; [ a complete Misconception ! ]
nobodywishes to "Push any millwall fans away" at all.
We also have Families, we also have Jobs and also do other things in life !
PPs : stands for Powder - Puff [ not Power Puff , we Millwall fans enjoy going all over the place [ including Budipest , Hungry, Portugal and Ireland ] to see the Players and meet supporters.
[ sadly ] Anyone who goes to Away Matches, will know that Millwall Fans are nearly alway Harrased,Baited and Sworn at [ But, as millwall we are used to that ] . I wonder how many remember the Young 22yr old Lady who was Pulled out of the Millwall Crowd [ By the Hair ], at Watford FC.? At least 6x of our lads were arrested for trying to help her.
[ although in fairness to the Police, None wer charged for anything and all released ] .
It was PPs on here that critiised our own fans on here [ Not long ago ; Shameful ! ]
    =======================
7/ PPs : don't stick up for other Lions Fans.
6/ Site - Poster on here : Follow Matches On TV / Radio.
5/ Poster on herewho live in other countries.
4/ Fans who go to occassional big matches.
3/ Fans who go to most matches.
2/ fans who go to all home matches: Season tickets - Plus.
1/Fans who go to all matches : Home and Away .
PPs we have enough people up against Millwall Fans, without, [ these
    so calledhome fans ] being " UNKIND " .
One must ask, Do we need these type of Fans support?
Anyway, Alex, and everybody..........Sorry for this Long Post.
We do Enjoy reading Post from : Foxy , Mitchamscaff, wall2wall, lukecoldblow10,
Sparacus,Fred,Lozza,Bonnie1272,Block28, Jim28and the very sensible Nikola.
[ Thanks to you all !.........keep Posting ].
As Stormin' said on one of his "Post" .........
    " You're Never Alone , When You're a Millwall Suppotter"

@Eightieswall: I can't believe I'm even bothering to reply to you, but it needs to be said as I'm going to stick up for ALL Millwall fans Bushwacker and no doubt I'll get the 25 dislikes or so from your "friends".... but what happened to the "Millwall Family"????

Like I have said, I go to around 15 games in total a season both home and away but I will always stick up for fellow Millwall fans.... I was born and raised in Bermondsey, used to be a season ticket holder until I moved about 60 miles away and now I get to as many games as I can... but what you don't understand is that quite a lot of Millwall fans have moved away from the area and can't get to games as frequent anymore and just go to the occasional game.

Like you have said - "we have enough people up against Millwall Fans, without these so called home fans" but what about people who damage the clubs reputation by throwing bottles at linesmen or fight in the stands at Wembley.... surely they are against Millwall fans despite apparently being a "fan" as they are getting themselves noticed for all the wrong reasons, so I would say they aren't Millwall fans at all..... Would you stick up and support these mindless idiots??? Or is your problem with the media who glorify these issues to be something they aren't??? Or is it both??

@BUSHWACKER14: If it's Millwall togetherness you want then why are you actively trying to segregate fans into "REAL" fans and "Powder Puffs"?? I don't see much togetherness in that... surely we are ALL Millwall and that's all that counts!!

@Bradders: What are on about? Who are these friends of mine you talk about? I post my views on Millwall and couldn't give a flying f*** whether people like it or not.For your information i think the like and dislike function is a waste of time and only creates rows and its obvious cliques amongst certain posters. I dont know why you have aimed your post at me nor what you are on about.

Last post on this point Bradders: Not separating fans. PPs - seem to criticise Millwall fans - Real Fans - stick up and support Millwall Fans. ( that's the only difference, nothing to do with how many games one attends ). NOLU,WDC. or as the Original BUSHWACKERS & F. TROOP once sang ; "We are Evil" . ( LOL )

@BUSHWACKER14: Then you are being hypocritical.... in my opinion you talk a lot of s*** as you are criticising Millwall fans for criticising fans.... that's massively backwards!

You said in another post that the PP's would like what Woolford came out and said about relegation being the 1st aim for this season.... that's you criticising people for having their opinion for wanting Millwalls aim to be to stay up this seas.... that my friend would make you a PowderPuff!

@BUSHWACKER14: I've got a bee in my bonnet because you continually s*** off Millwall fans by calling them Powder Puffs, I really don't see the point in doing that?? As I've said I will always stick up for ALL Millwall fans, because like YOU said we have got to have that togetherness but by calling fans Powder Puffs and alienating some fans from the others you aren't really going by what you believe in "togetherness"!!

I think you are a very mixed up individual and would love to meet you at a game to talk about this! From what I can gather from your posts, me & you have polar opposite lives!
