Millwall boss rues team selection after first defeat in 13

IAN Holloway took responsibility for Millwall's surprise defeat to Rotherham by admitting that he got his team selection wrong.

The Lions' 12-game unbeaten run was ended by Ben Pringle's winner in the second half and Holloway said that his side looked tired after their midweek trip to Sheffield Wednesday.

Holloway made two changes to his starting XI for the visit of the Millers – including Ricardo Fuller and Josh Wright in his line up – but conceded he should have made more alterations.

He said: "We didn't function like we have been and in hindsight I felt I should've made more changes to the team having looked at the game.

"My attackers looked a bit tired and not quite as effective as they have been, to be honest.

"When we needed some legs to sprint in behind as our moves were building, we didn't have that.

"We've created one shot on target out of 60 percent possession which hasn't been like us.

"We got 16 crosses into the box. Fuller got on the end of a couple but he missed the target.

"It's down to the strength in depth of the squad. Could I have made a few more changes after Tuesday? Would it have affected things any more?

"I wanted to reward that team because we were on such a good roll and there was a great euphoria after our equaliser the other evening.

"Maybe I should have made three or four more changes for this game. You live and die by decisions and maybe I got that one wrong.

"One or two of them didn't feel like they had the same energy – they didn't mean to feel that way – but that is just the way it went."

Pringle was totally unmarked at the far post when he turned home Paul Taylor's centre.

"That should have been 0-0 – but they have created three chances on target and scored one of them," Holloway added.

"I knew how tough this game would be because my scout told me that they didn't deserve to lose to Watford the other day.

"Rotherham have got a great system and they're used to winning. We were used to winning but they've stopped that.

"We didn't defend the cross well enough. Sometimes in life you've got to hold your hands up because that's not as good as we've been – it wasn't that bad either.

"We could still be out there now and we might not have scored. We've got to start another unbeaten run now."

Josh Wright had ANOTHER good chance to prove himself today. Yet again, he has failed to do it. Time to get rid I think.

@kieranj88: This was not just down to Josh Wright, the lack of anyone being able to finish, showed a major weakness in the squad, the team today did not look anyway like the side who played at Fulham last week.
We need someone who can get us 15 goals a season, but if there is such a player can we afford him and would he come to us rather than a better supported team than us, (look at todays gate compare to the Leeds game)

@Barnlion: You make a good point its not Josh Wrights fault its a team game I think we miss Bailey but Fuller wasn't on form Easter offered very little when he came on. We need an out and out pain in the a*** forward who will drive defenders nuts I do think we have good strikers but we need a plan b before we start a game to make em think how will they attack us.

@Barnlion: Never put the blame entirely onto him, it's an observation that every time that he has an opportunity to prove his doubters wrong, he puts in a poor performance. You are 100% right that we need an out and out striker who will bang at minimum 15 a season for us, otherwise the good possession football that Holloway wants us to play won't count for zilch!

Got bashed up by a physical team that always had an outlet with their centre forward winning everything, might be worth looking at signing Alex Revell

Forde 6 - one good save and decent distribution
    Edwards 6 - Didn't get forward enough
Dunne 6 - Struggled against the big man
Beevers 6 - Again struggled and looked nervous when in possession
Malone 4 - got forward well but final ball was appalling
Wright 4 - not good enough. Passenger.
Williams 7 - Only one who could pass the ball today
Martin 4 - lost the ball too many times
McDonald 5 - same as Martin
Woolford 4 - No involvement from him
    Fuller 3 - don't get me started
Gueye, Easter, Gregory 5 - not enough time really.

Overall it was a shoddy performance and can't argue about losing as we didn't ever look like scoring.
Move on and get 3 points next Saturday and pray to god we sign a striker. Because Fuller is naff.

Such a frustrating game, our passing was excellent at times especially by Williams , in the end I think they just lost heart, having so much possession and creating so few chances is soull destroying. We all know how dreadfully short we are of a championship quality striker and it really hit home today.

How long u been following us! Come on mate, everyone knows this is typical Millwall. If you'd have told me 11 games a go we'd go unbeaten till now id have thought you were mad. We are not a good team, let's get that right, we are average but under holloway we have a strong work ethic and are hard to break down. We have some good players and are improving slowly. But let's not get carried away, we have a had a great start to the season and have deserved the points we have so far but it's still too early to work out if we have what it takes to finish in the top half of the table. I'd settle for a finish between 10th and 15th if you offered it to me now.

got to give ollie credit for saying he got it wrong.
dont understand dropping jimmy , cant be tied he is the fittest at the club , if injured then why have him on the bench , how many times did josh go up with his own players for headers ,
every time the ball went up to fuller , he didnt hold it , his touch is shocking, he is a sub all day long
if we want a good season ollie needs to find a big striker who can keep the ball and bring our midfield into play its the missing piece , we looked ok first half when mac and martin was giving the ball , but it kept coming back , please board get ollie a striker or its a last season all over again , dont think my nerves can take that

Worst performance for a very long time - including last season!
    1 questionable shot on goal?
What happened to all the team spirit, camaradary, leadership, commitment, never say die attitude - back to square 1 in my book.
Even IH seemed devoid of ideas as to how to change things.
    Has the bubble burst?
We have invetsed in a striker that the manager plainly does not fancy - beacuse we dont read his runs???
Very poor result against a very poor side.
Not enough quality up front - could not open them up at all - whole pace of the game was too slow
Hope its just a blip - but maybe not???

@benzo: Sorry mate but Abdou and Wright coupled with Smith, Shittu and Robinson are not Championship players. The proof of that is seeing today's game with Wright in midfield - nuff said. Abdou not much better. Smith now playing two divisions below as is Robinson. Don't get me started on Shittu.
What we need are two strikers and a midfielder akin to Bailey. We seem to have a decent defence with cover but we're going to get found out very quickly unless we spend some serious dosh up front and in midfield. Spend the cash or it will go down to the last game of the season----for the third year running.

IH you have earned much credit and I have enormous respect for you but in my very terraces apprenticeship opinion you have got it wrong with the strikers. Total error in signing Easter and Fuller (full of). Probably could have got away with signing one of them but not both. Gregory needs to be given a run and from the start to gain confidence. No goals from your strikers yet Mr Holloway and 1 week left.

I wasn't there so hard to really know much but gotta keep positive and keep building. I wondered during the week bout this game , didn't seem as hyped up as the last couple . I sort of wish that big man hoff had a human head instead of a watermelon on his shoulders and stayed around, with some decent service May had posed some problems for the opp but that's history now. Anyways, let's get on with it .

Well we all know what is needed,so won't bother saying it. LUKE WRIGHT,not good enough, very negative in his passing, just plays little dinks sideways, backwards. FULLER,not mobile enough, why keep him on for so long when he was so ineffective , GREGORY had so little time to get into the game, should have got him on much earlier. Why take MARTIN off,I thought he was the one bright spark in our team. WOOLFORD was quiet, he could have come off,MCDONALD average. EDWARDS is class though. Our build is so slow and laboured it's easy for teams to get back behind the ball and defend. We have to get balls in behind defenders quicker than we are doing, and then we need a more mobile forward to get on to them, GREGORY I'm sure would be that man if he is played.FULLER : don't hold it up , lost most headers, not mobile, so what's the attraction , lads what am I missing here?

What is with all the doom and gloom, I said last week when we have a loss we must not give up on the team and it seems to me that a lot have and got back to being negative again. Was it a poor performance yes, but after the last twelve we have to accept that it will happen. The first half we looked OK playing some good football both teams missed a couple of chances and it seemed to me whoever scored first would win, they did to us what we did to Fulham. A win on Saturday makes us two points a game which is play off form, which when you consider we have not got a striker firing YET, is not a bad place to be. I still think that both Gregory and certainly Magaye will be fine, we have Baily to come back and Ollie, Mick and Andy are certainly looking for the right forward, they make no secret of the fact they have always wanted a big lump like the Hoff or Smith for the plan B. Come on guy’s don’t panic we are in a good place, don’t give up, we do not expect the team to they have the right to expect the same from us.

What I dont understand is Ollie knows we have and still have a striker problem, pays 250k for a young prolific scorer (albeit lower league) yet plays a cart horse up front. Give the kid a chance, he is probably frothing at the bit to prove himself. Dont think Fuller is.

For me it's not about this defeat now, as disappointing as it was. Holloway finds himself in a fortunate week to re-motivate the team in that he has a no lose game on Tuesday that we are not expected to win and we have a club in turmoil visiting next weekend. What happens next Saturday could shape our season as a defeat could undo all of the confidence building we have been hearing about these last few months. 10 points from five games would be a great return and set us up nicely for a more comfortable season.

@lion.ie: I don't put so much emphasis on beating Blackpool, it's just another game and we generally do better against the bigger clubs anyway. I do think we will beat them but if we don't, let's at least play well.

@glyngo: Not disagreeing mate, it's one game in a season. However, it's the effect a defeat in another game we are expected to win will have on the teams and the home crowds confidence in the longer term that is my concern and I still worry about Holloway's managerial record as well as a long run of games without a win would not surprise me. Blackpool is the most ideal opportunity to get straight back to winning ways.

Goals win games. We aint got goals. Matty fryatt went on a free, Tom pope at port vale scores for fun. I thought our chairman had money. If you don't spend out on a goal scorer you go backwards. We don't have to spend big on loads of players but surely one wont hurt and it would move us forward.

what a Difference from last season. Stop complaining I now have belief in winning any game if they get their game heads on. Seeing players passing instead of the old lob it up front, we all make mistakes at work and have bad days Ollie has experience, a football brain, speaks frankly, admits mistakes, and making do with what he got and what he was left with,. Players earning silly wages who are not worth it. A good manager takes about 3 years to get a club the way he wants it. seeing out players contacts,. Who else would want to manage us with his record of getting 2 clubs into the prem with limit resources .

How about giving Gregory a run in the team, use Fuller as an impact sub for a few games to preserve his legs.
