Millwall boss throws down the gauntlet as pre-season begins

IAN Holloway has challenged the likes of Richard Chaplow, Jimmy Abdou, Justin Hoyte and Josh Wright to force their way into Millwall's starting XI this year.

The Lions reported for pre-season training on Thursday and Holloway is looking forward to thoroughly assessing every member of his squad over the summer.

And the Millwall manager is hoping that those players who were on the fringes of his group at the end of the 2013-14 campaign can now force their way into first-team contention.

He said: "If Chaplow comes back fit, he can do a myriad of things with his talent – he can play in two or three positions.

"Hopefully we can get him fit and he feels he is ready to come to Portugal, so let's see what he can do for me.

"I haven't written off Wright yet – I have told him what I want him to do and I'm looking forward to see what he's done over the summer to get into the reckoning.

"The same applies to Hoyte and Abdou. I didn't use Jimmy enough so I can't wait to get some team structure into him and get him going like I did at Plymouth."

Holloway added: "I'm really looking forward to it. I've had a nice break and it's been longer than what I've been used to over the past couple of years, which has been a bonus.

"Pre-season is a good opportunity for us to see how the lads are and to see how the young lads do in the first couple of weeks.

"There will be an assessment first to see exactly what we need to do and then we will individualise some people's work if they're not quite ready.

"Those who aren't quite ready for the group will be caught up and then we'll start looking at team structure.

"We'll get the group together to see where we are, what we need and then make some decisions based on that.

"By the start of the season, we'll have a squad that I believe has got some fresh, young ones in it who can push the senior pros.

"I need to see how many spaces I should be leaving before I bring anyone else in."

I hope IH does give the likes of Jimmy a fair chance like his said. I know Jimmy ain't the most gifted in the team but has come on leaps and bounds from when we first took him on and gives his all for the badge on the shirt. But with the likes of Upson, Bailey, Williams ahead of him and only 2 positions in the 11 it looks tougher and tougher for him to break through. Will love you always Jimmy!

As for Chaplow it will be interesting to see how he does as he didn't get a full preseason least summer and if he can get the groundwork in how IH intends then we may so a massive return to form for him as I do think there is still something there for him.

As for Hoyte... I'll shut the door as you leave 🙂

@Omer Ronayne: did you see his debut at Bolton then ? I did and I for one don't know what happened. He is a quality player we need him playing not cunted off by Hal wits.

I reckon Josh wright is exactly the type of player Ollie likes, calm on the ball, good range of passing and good technique. His perrformances last season were not good, but he has it in him to play at this level. I think he could do well if he can get his fitness right and get sharper in the field.

I to hope jimmy gets a clean slate like the one hoyte & other losers are getting...cos there's one player who dont have to prove himself (IMO)and thats jim...he was saved from the scrapheap by kj from olly..turned him into a holding mid..and sometimes done the work of 2..olly dont cast him away again

@Jim28: Spot on Jim, out of the names mentioned above - you could bet your bottom dollar that Jimmy will pass any kind of fitness test put on him. Always gives 100%.. Just depends on him fitting into Ollies more technical style of play - tightening up his passing and linking play... Which I think he has done in the reduced amount of pitch time he's had recently...

Whatever happens, and Whoever gets chosen, this is all good news for us ..... healthy/tough competition to get your place in the starting 11 = a better depth to the squad...
Something we've been struggling with for the last few seasons and all the best teams thrive on it...

Chaplow can be a big player for us this season if he stays fit!
I don't think Wright will get much game time and would do a good job for a league one team.
Jimmy an absolute lions legend, who will be on the bench every week, but chances of starting will be scarce as he has dropped down the pecking order.
Hoyte, what a waste of space, why we signed this mug baffles me, pay his contract up and get rid of ASAP!!!!!

Well at least IH is giving all the players a chance to prove themselves and its up to them, including Justin Hoyte, if IH can bring the best out of him then all to the good. Next season may be tougher than the last and Millwall need a tough squad to cope with it and not have a repeat of last season's mess.

@block 28: Unfortunately we might as well keep Hoyte and Chaplow rather than trying to pay them off, which could end up being a lot worse for the club if we force guys out of the club. I expect Chaplow to come back fit and sharp, he is a quality player on his day and if he can find his form then our midfield will be a whole lot stronger!

Hoyte, well I want him out as much as the next person but I don't think he would leave even if we offered to buy him out of his contract as he won't be able to find another club, I'm willing to give everyone a clean slate and see what happens! Hoyte could come good or just be an unfit money grabber.... only time will tell!!

@block 28: I know what you mean Block 28, but Jim has to improve his passing game if he is to stand any chance of getting back into the team. The close passing game that we are now playing will be beyond him judging by last seasons performances. I would be made up if Jim got back into the first team, he is a legend, but he has a lot of work to do.

If these players can't rise up to that kind of prompt, then they don't deserve to be in the squad.

@NICKOLA: Exactly, I think that's what Ollie has in mind as well.... he only wants players who are going to work hard and listen to what he has to say but then more importantly put it into practice! I'm all for giving guys a chance, but now is their last chance!

@block 28: What do you mean last chances?? This is Ollie's 1st pre-season with this group of players! If you speak to any player this is the time of year when it's do or die for the rest of the season!

Ollie knows if there is someone who isn't pulling their weight then they are out of the club.

@Jim28: I understand yours and block28's point but a pre-season is nothing like being in the middle of the season, these players SHOULD be fresh and ready to go and if not then they will be gone... I think that's what Ollie is saying here!

All the players fitness was terrible under Lomas, everyone knew it and Ollie found that out straight away... but it took a lot longer for some players to get fit than others, no he has pre-season he needs to see who is committed to his fitness regime and just who isn't up for it!!

There could well be a player in Hoyte still as yet we haven't seen it but circumstances are different now.
Josh Wright is much better than most millwall fans give him credit for but yet again we'll see.
I love Jimmy but he just ain't good enough, real shame that.
Chaplow was playing in the perm 2 seasons ago so there must be a player there somewhere but yet again we'll see.
I can see Williams & Upson being first choice midfielders though.

Ollie said recently that all the players would start with a clean slate. Despite what us supporters think about certain players eg. Bywater, Hoyte, Abdou, Wright,,Chaplow etc we should do the same. After all Ollie might bring out the best in 1 or 2 of them like he did with Bailey towards the end of last season.

@denslions: a few of those you've named I feel have no future at the club.

As they're still contracted and we can't get rid if Ollie can get some decent performances from them then great.

We can hope at least as they're being paid regardless.

Why does Jimmy need a clean slate? Player of the Season a couple of years back and now he's not good enough? The Championship hasn't suddenly moved up a level. Jimmy can play an important role for us be it first team or as a squad player. No doubt he has areas of his game he needs to improve but so do plenty of others.

Whatever the outcome this season you will not be able to knock the gaffers effort the feller is pure class. Watching his interviews and witnessing the foundations he is laying down for the clubs future is immense. From the pitch right through to the youth team he is making every effort. "I have only 11 first team shirts, if I can't give you one what will be doing for the club that is Millwall"

@lion.ie: yea whatever the outcome! it won't be because of a lack of effort. The majority of clubs in this league are spending money on players that we can only dream of. So all have is effort

Few players have played with as much heart as Abdou, but his skills are limited. I hate to say it but loyalty and sentiment will not keep us in this division. Any TEAM , need their players to be passionate, but skill and ability must trump loyalty. Sadly, a sign of the times.

Agree with most of the comments but in certain games we might hav to change the way we play & dig in & man mark somebody out of the game. What better player to do that than jimmy abdou. & to say he has to prove himself is b*******. Let's not beat about the bush the other lot can do one.

We have an abundance of midfield players at the club now but IH is still looking at bringing one or two in.
Speaks volumes that we could have a weakness in that dept next season.

Jimmy was Ok for many years but that was when it didn't matter that he couldn't pass to one of our players from 10 yards. I have his picture at home, but its a different league now and we need quality not headless chickens. I wish him well if he moves on.

Look at cycling, Wiggins dropped for the Tour, it's the right thing for the team plan.
