Seven Millwall starlets could go to Portugal but trio sit out

DANNY Shittu, Carlos Edwards and David Forde will sit out Millwall's pre-season training camp in Portugal next week.

But up to seven Lions youngsters could be on the plane to the Algarve as manager Ian Holloway prepares to inject some fresh energy into his squad.

Millwall's players reported for duty at the training ground this morning for two days of fitness assessments before their flight to Lagos.

"Space is limited and I will only be taking players who can train three times a day," Holloway said.

"That's pretty gruelling in the heat we're going to be experiencing over there so those who go need to be ready for that.

"The young ones will all go because they will be ready but I might leave some senior ones behind and see them the following week.

"Some of them don't need to do all of that work right now.

"Edwards has got problems with his work permit and coming in and out of the country, but that doesn't matter because he's a fit lad and he'll be back the week after.

"I don't expect Shittu to come either – there's no point dragging him into that scenario. I've already made that decision.

"Danny was injured at the end of last season but he wouldn't train three times a day anyway because of his knee, so he'll understand that.

"Forde is having a longer break so I'm not going to take him – I'll take two other 'keepers.

"He needs an extra week with his family because he's only just finished playing. He needs to come back refreshed."

Asked which rising stars will join the first team in Portugal, Holloway revealed: "Jack Powell, Fred Onyedinma, Jake Goodman, Aiden O'Brien and John Marquis will definitely come.

"Possibly Josh Siafa and Alfie Pavey too, I'm not quite sure yet. If they do well, I'll keep them in the squad – if they aren't quite there yet, I'll loan them out."

Glad to hear the youngsters are being given a proper go now! A lot of them pi**ed off when Jackett was in charge because they just wanted being given a chance whereas we have always been known for producing good youngsters!

I'll be keen to see if anyone isn't up to the scratch and isn't allowed to go to Portugal because they are too unfit!

@BUSHWACKER14: I'm not sure what all the negativity is about around Shittu, he was such a proud man when he was made captain and put the performances in too. played pretty well once he shed some fat at the end of last season but got injured which was unfortunate.

@Bradders: Yes, absolutely with you on this one. Surely if a player has made the effort to shed all that weight and improve then that should be recognised. I thought, along with everybody else, he was really not up to the job in the first half of last season, but he turned in some excellent performances under IH holding things together until he got injured. And even though there may well have been individual moments when he made mistakes I reckon his value to the team in his good spell outweighed those mistakes, No, he's not the long term answer - let's hope our Yorkshire Tall Boys are - but I wouldn't necessarily completely write Danny off, and I certainly don't feel he merits all the slagging off he receives from some quarters. How can be seen to be milking the club? Beginning of last season when he was so overweight, maybe, but not after that . . .

@waterloolion: I've always said that he is flawed as a centre half because his positioning at times is ridiculous. However, I don't think anybody can doubt his commitment? Deserves a chance when fit and more importantly, if good enough.

@Bradders: Yes, we are D.Shittu's no: 1 fans! But, if he is not gonna get FIT. ( he's getting older ). We pray he can Captain MFC for One More Season, like he did before, but time and age doesn't stand still for anybody.

@BUSHWACKER14: Why is he not going to get FIT? Has he said he won't to you? 1 thing you can say about Danny is that he gives it 100% all the time and he will do his everything to get fit and ready for the season.

@lion.ie - positioning was particularly bad under Lomas and Holloway's early days, hence why he dropped him so he could sit down and learn where he needed to be on the pitch. A great leader and man mountain... SHITUUUUUUU

@BUSHWACKER14: No, he did NOT say to me that he was not gonna get fit, ( but, he has come over to us on many away - games , ( which if you have ever gone to any, will have seen him do ) . We do admire D. Shittu Loads. But , ask people like Nicola on this site- knows a lot about Danny S , has inside knowledge.

@BUSHWACKER14: Yes and will be at Fulham for the 1st away game thank you! I only care about what I see on the pitch and what comes direct from his mouth, otherwise it could be a load of old cobblers.

          @Bradders:

I agree totally with you on this.

I watched Danny at Derby (where he and others were injured)

That was a real backs to the wall performance and was a foretaste of good things to come.

It was all that we expect of Millwall and those 3 points were critical at the end.

Slagging Danny Shittu off is stupid. The man was giving everything at this stage and he got seriously injured.

          What does jim28 want?

To shoot him? - as an example to others?

@BUSHWACKER14: I see that some people have their pet hates. I've read in the last few days about Gerrard for example. IMO a fine footballer. Past his prime certainly, but there was value in taking him to Brazil.
My pet hates are Shittu and Ambler. Ambler is for another day.
With regard to Shittu, here is someone who is being paid by Millwall-and therefore by us- who reports back after the close season grossly overweight which is an absolute disgrace. Consequently, he is unfit in his position, cannot track back, has no problem continuing living under the ' That's what we do' quote due to the one goal he scored and had no real competition for his place. As a result of being unfit and overweight, he gets injured and cannot recover, despite intensive physiotherapy. Now with the players reporting back after a 8 week break, he isn't under consideration for Portugal. What a surprise. Ollie has seen through it. We haven't signed Webster, nor hoping to sign another to cover because he's up for it. Bottom line is that he isn't. When you watch a game the tendency is to watch 'the game'. If you actually spend 5 mins watching Shittu, you'll see that he's all over the place. He's under contract and I'll guarantee you no-one else will want him so we're stuck paying wages to him rather than someone else. The proof of all this will be seeing who plays the most games at centre half this season. My money is on Beevers and Webster.

@NICKOLA: Where does it say he is grossly overweight? He has been carrying an injury for the past few months so cannot train as much as everyone else.

Let's leave all the slagging off until after the 1st few games of the season and see what he is up to, because if he is FIT and playing well then what's your problem if he is overweight? If unfit then you are more than welcome to say "I told you so" but only after the 1st 10 games to see where he is at.

@BUSHWACKER14: Ignore this guy, he has no idea what he is talking about! "Milking the club"??? Shittu when FIT towards the end of last season done very well and played with pride in a Millwall shirt.... doubt you go to any games, otherwise you wouldn't be saying that at all!!

What's all this Shittu hate about? Pack it in and get behind our contracted players. Then we might get the. Best out of them. H said he has a dodgy knee and won't ask him to do 3 a day in the heat that's sensible man management isn't it????

@lion.ie Yes I agree that he's flawed and yes, his positioning at times would certainly have had the likes of Alan Hansen going berserk, but often he compensated in other ways. Anyway, let's see how he gets on, one year older, one further injury to cope with etc. And Messi didn't score against him, as Danny has often reminded us . . .!

@Millwallpad: I don't think we can afford to pay Robinsons, Dunne's and Shittu's wages, at least 1 of them has to go and would lean towards Robinson as he is somewhat slower than Shittu and of course not as strong but could definitely do a good job for a league 1 side!

Dan Shittu is a Millwall player, Dan is a man mountain and was my player of the match in many games over the last 2 seasons. Who doesn't make mistakes. Let's get behind the boys and let them feel proud to play at The Den. Also just a reminder any boo boys in the first ten minutes (East upper block 17), be prepared to wear a BALTI pie
