Chief executive Ambler relieved as Millwall duo extend deals

MILLWALL chief executive Andy Ambler admits it is a relief to have tied down David Forde and Lee Martin to new deals.

Martin signed a new two-year contract with the Lions on Tuesday, just days after goalkeeper David Forde put pen-to-paper on a three-year extension.

Ambler said: "Lee was a bit like Forde – we spoke to them both straight after the season ended but they had commitments to go away.

"Martin's come back from a holiday, walked straight through the door and we've agreed a two-year deal.

"That was something the manager wanted – re-signing Lee, Carlos Edwards and Forde from last year's team – and we've achieved that."

Martin said that Holloway was the reason he agreed to stay, and the Lions boss added: "I believe there's a lot more to come from Lee.

"I've given him two years and it gives him a chance to be settled and to hopefully produce what I feel he is capable of, and what he started to show towards the end of the season.

"Middlesbrough away he was absolutely fantastic, and at Nottingham Forest it was the best he's played for a long time.

"It’s all about confidence with Lee, and I feel he will be at the right place and will be playing a certain type of football that suits him."

yep. i think most of us are happy with the signings/ extended contracts! now let's get someone maybe ishmail miller? to partner lee gregory, byron webster and another winger! then im pretty sure most of us would be chuffed with that. although i still think we need to off bywaster and get a goalie who's actually gonna push forde for a starting spot!

@steveomfc5: give young gerarr a chance might not be starting 11 standard but has always looked like a promising prospect from what I've seen

If we do have more money to spend, I don't think Ishmael Miller
Is someone we should bring in. I can't think if anyone else though

I'm very glad we got Lee Martin tied down for 2 more years and is at a good age, he looked very good in the last 8 games of the season after coming back from injury.

This might upset a few people BUT I'm shocked the club has offered David Forde a 3 years deal at the club, he was OK last season nothing more, he had his best season a few years back and hasn't looked the same since.

I would have offered him a 1 or 2 year deal max, but considering the amount of good goalkeepers available at the minute like Gilks and Westwood to name 2, it seems a little excessive for a goalkeeper well in his 30's who isn't in the prime form of his life and to be given a 3 year deal!!

@Bradders: that 3 year deal could turn into a 4 if his performances are up to it by the kick in time...a old player gets twice as lonp as a young player..makes no sense

@Jim28: Exactly, I'm not saying Forde isn't a good goalkeeper because he clearly is but 3 year contract but that length of contract doesn't really make players work hard to earn their next new deal, like some of the youngsters have to.

@Jim28: I still say that Forde has turned us over and we should have let him walk away but since no one came in for him his agent should get a knighthood for getting a dodgy keeper a 3 year deal

@Bradders: 'Keepers play later in to there career often not hitting peeks till later 30's! Look at Friedel...just signed a new 1 year contract at Spuds and he's 42!

@jasoncleftpallett: You are bang on about keepers playing into their 40's but it's still a rarity, but Friedel has been given 1 year deals for the past 4-5 years.... you also mention "hitting peaks" well if you saw Forde last year compared to a few years ago then you would say he has already hit & had his peak!

3 seasons back he was immense, the season before last he was ok, this season wasn't so good either.... not saying he is bad, but not worth a 3 year deal when Holloway has said he is looking to the future!!

@Bradders: I think he's still better than most out there that we can budget for, though I do agree 3 possibly 4 years maybe a little long. 2 years max. Then 1 year extensions on top of that depending on appearances. Only argument for the possibility of 4 years could be to help as back up towards the end and helping 'tutor' a younger keeper like Gerrar?

3 seasons ago we had a stronger more confident side overall, could be a different matter under Holloway. Confidence looks to be coming back, judging by the end of last season. May see a return to that previous form now the idea of moving on has gone. Resided to seeing his career out at the club perhaps?

@jasoncleftpallett: Forde is on a retirement plan! I can't see how that can be an argument to keep Forde for potentially 4 years when we have a goalkeeping coach in Kevin Pressman.... Forde is already loved at Millwall and he loves the club, so there will be opportunities for him to return as a coach one day but just believe Millwall have been weak and let Forde get what he wants (a large payday at the end of his career!)

Gilks, a class goalkeeper who was immense last season or Westwood who has prem experience and plays with Forde for Ireland who both are in budget and most importantly younger!!

@Longfield Lion: All under contract though I have no doubt Ollie has tried his best to move them on. Once the season starts and they're not in the squad, I'm optimistic that their agents will be looking to get them deals elsewhere. We all live in hope.

@NICKOLA: Understand what your saying, but with some of the youngsters promoted to the senior squad and I know IH wants to sign some more, the squad will have to be thinned out.

@Longfield Lion: I agree on Hoyte and Bywater. I still think Wright has a chance of making the team..maybe I'm going nuts! Who would buy Hoyte though, track history of problems and not professional in his preparation and fitness, hardly apealing to anyone. Lets hope he has a close family member running a team that wants to do him a favour!

I think AA and Ollie deserve a lot of credit for convincing players to stay at the club, it would have been a tough sell with other clubs sniffing around them so credit where it is due.

In my opinion Forde is one of the best in the league, pretty consistent and seems to want to improve on some of his weaker traits (kicking), whilst his decision to start punching the ball instead of flapping trying to catch it has been a revelation. I love his attitude roaring at the players and would rather him there then any of the others who would be available on our budget. With regards to Lee Martin he has shown glimpses of brilliance and given an injury free season he could bag us a few goals. Agree with getting the likes of By water and Wright out but this needs other teams to come in with offers.... not gonna happen

Can someone please explain the fascination with Andre Gray from Luton, when we played a couple of years ago he didn't look up to the job and we were a poor team then. I know he might not be everyone's cuppa but what about a cheeky bid for Chris Wood, he's sat on the bench every week and last season he was fifth choice striker behind Taylor-Fletcher and Kevin Phillips.

@uncle albert: Good idea but just can't see that happening. What I do know is that we need a seasoned and proven striker signed asap. Will be the difference to getting into the top eight or the lower end. With Easter, McDonald and Marquis I just can't see where Gregory is going to get the support from and that's assuming he hits the ground running. Will be interesting to see if Millwall can pull off a big surprise and catch us all unawares.
