Exclusive: Defender Webster close to sealing Millwall switch

MILLWALL are closing in on the signing of Yeovil defender Byron Webster.

The 27-year-old is due to "tie up details" with chief executive Andy Ambler upon his return from holiday this week.

Webster played 45 times for Yeovil last campaign as they were immediately relegated back to League One.

But Lions boss Ian Holloway feels Webster's versatility will add competition in defensive areas.

"I think he will improve our squad's strength," Ollie said.

"We're trying to improve the goals-against column, so to do that you've got to stop goals going in.

"In the end, I moved Alan Dunne inside and he did really well, but he's a full-back and if he wants to play centre-half he's got to have more competition.

"Mark Beevers is good in the air and this kid's 6ft 3in as well, so without Danny Shittu at the end of last year and Paul Robinson out as well I need to up the game.

"I've got young Jake Goodman coming through as well, so hopefully there will be more competition in the defensive areas to make it harder to be in the team and stay in the team, and make us stronger if someone www.mindanews.com/buy-ventolin/ gets injured."

"That's the idea behind it," Holloway added.

“I like how Byron uses the ball form defence and I think he can play left side or right side, and with him I can also change my tactics and go three at the back if I need to.

"Hopefully someone like Byron can step to the plate for us.

"I think he's in our bracket of the right age and wants to improve his career having just had one season in the Championship.

"I want him to try to help us get to the top of the Championship rather than the bottom.

"I want a squad that can compete, so we have a different mentality."

Meanwhile, Holloway has laughed off Rotherham United's interest in Lions defender Mark Beevers.

Ollie said: "To be fair, we totally dismissed it. We paid £300,000 for him so why would we want to take £100,000 or £150,000?

"It's a bit of a strange thing but never mind. They probably got a little carried away with themselves because they just got promoted — probably a bit of excitement on their part."

6'3 and he's a bit of a unit as well. Not a "Danny Shittu" grade unit, no where near but he's strong and what I've seen of him he constantly winds up the opposition which we all like to see don't we?

@steveomfc5: agreed. Rotherham are waiting in the wings to jump in with an offer of a bottle of coke and a baked potato.

He comes from a defence that couldn't cope with next season's standard of defending so I'm not getting too excited about him just yet.

@Millwallsteve: to be fair rarely can a single player carry the entire team. If the rest of the defence was pony hardly his fault Yeovil went down. Plus he can score a few which will come in handy.

      @Millwallsteve:
I sort of agree with this but it's the same principle behind the beevers situation isn't it . . He has come from a defence that couldn't cope as well . . So does that mean he is only worth a hundred long ones?
