Webster edges closer to Millwall move after Holloway chat

MILLWALL are set to discuss contract terms with Byron Webster after he made a positive impression on manager Ian Holloway during a meeting last week.

The defender, who is a free agent after turning down a new deal at Yeovil, has put talks with another Championship club on hold as he prepares to enter negotiations with the Lions.

Webster sat down with Holloway last Thursday for a face-to-face chat about what a move to The Den would entail.

And both parties are believed to have expressed a desire to reach a swift agreement.

The 27-year-old made 85 appearances for the Glovers during a two-season stint in Somerset but has left Huish Park in the wake of the club's relegation to League One.

@wolla5: a lot of interest from championship clubs,so must be ok, competition for Beevers and Shittu, the end for Robbo I reckon, but a lions legend still.

@dpendet: Yep, as Ollie likes D. Shittu as Captain and to run the Show, Back will be Shittu, Beevers & Webster. ( probably Danny's last season ).like our other defenders, who have come to the end of the Championship Line.

Good physique, quick and comfortable with the ball at his feet. Exactly what we have been missing. He's a bit reminiscent of Darren Ward in his hey day.

So assuming we don't sell anyone, what would you all say is our current strongest first 11?
Who would you change in that 11?
And who would replace them (using the youth and realistic transfers free signings)?

@br00ker: Here's my Eleven so far

      Forde (Gilks/Westwood) if doesn't sign a contract
Edwards | Webster - Shittu or Beevers | Malone
      Fred | Bailey - Upson | Martin
Andre Gray & Chuks Aneke (That pace up front would be unbelievable).

I still feel we need to get rid of the following - McDonald, Wright, Robbo, Bywater.... I'm still unsure on Chaplow as he can be a great player when fit but how many games will he last??

After writing up that 11 I think we need more good solid midfielders and a big man up front!

      @br00ker:
Does anyone know if this Webster is worthy of an armband? Because in my opinion (correct me if i'm wrong) but without Robbo or Shittu I don't see a captain anywhere.
We need a sensible, tough, solid. VOCAL midfielder or CB to make it all gel.

@br00ker: Bailey could do the job.... although he would do it with or without the Armband! I think Shittu will still be in the team as long as he can prove his fitness

@br00ker: Definitely. Everyone has put our good run at the end of the season down to Dunne's training ground rant and him moving to CB or Edwards loan arrival! But for me it was Bailey coming back in to the team with a completely different attitude and being told that he needs to improve his fitness and work on a few things. For me he was the main reason we played the way we did coming to the end of the season and if there was vote he would get mine for the captaincy. Also, he live's a couple of roads away from me and i see him out running most mornings and according to his wife(twitter), their not going on holiday in the close season because he wants to focus on his fitness. Great attitude, massive turnaround for a player that i don't think was that motivated under Lomas.

@br00ker: Relax br00ker ! D. Shittu will be ready for the Start of the season ( including friendlies ), he's very Vocal and is always talking to the other Players during the match. ( which is why Ollie makes him Team Captain ) .

@BUSHWACKER14: A few people are calling for Shittu and Robbo to go to make way, but as I said with neither of them in the team we could be rudderless, personally I don't think Bailey is the vocal type of captain, he is a lead by example player. I believe in leading from CB or CM.
I would like Shittu to stay but does that mean Webster is ousting Beevers or is he just coming in as back up? One of the other clubs will have him if he is just a cover player.

@br00ker: yes, on here at Newsatden there are a couple of Shittu - dislikes, but those who saw ALL MILLWALL MATCHES will have seen the players who did well ( home and away ) . But, not to worry everybody to their own likes - it's Ian Holloway that matters, he decides. In my opinion , he will stick with D. Shittu for one more season .

@br00ker: I like Danny Shittu, he inspires and has a lionheart. Nit too sure about this Webster, after all Yeovil were relegated and what did he do to stop that happening? We need a striker Ollie !

Our poor goal difference last season was partly down to the number of free headers we conceded in the first two-thirds of the season, so someone with his height may be Holloway's solution to that problem. Also, if he can play the ball out from the back that will fit nicely into the style of play the manager wants to develop. Sign him up quickly before Leeds or Ipswich snatch him.

We need PACE. Simple as. x2 pacey and clinical young strikers that can score goals on a regular basis. Get rid of morison, mcdonald and jackson as they just have high pay and not play for the badge. Also add a few quality players in the midfield aswell.

@@mikemogridge: I reckon Dunne is still in the running for the captains armband and CB position, he will just have to show to Ollie in preseason that he can improve his passing and physical presence to be consistent over a whole season.
