Holloway to put faith in Millwall's youngsters next season

IAN Holloway has revealed that "five or six" youngsters will join Millwall's first-team ranks when the squad returns for pre-season training.

The Lions boss believes the likes of Fred Onyedinma, Aiden O'Brien, John Marquis and Jake Goodman could all have a part to play for the senior side during the 2014-15 campaign.

And Holloway insists that he will not "block things up" for Millwall's rising stars by signing hordes of players from other clubs this summer.

"I'm really looking forward to working with the young ones – there are five or six of them who will be added to the squad from the start of pre-season," he said.

"That is why I'm not jumping in on every deal at the moment because I believe one or two of them might come through.

"The last thing I want to do is fill their spaces in the squad if I then decide they are good enough. We've got a really decent academy set up.

"Scott Fitzgerald works his socks off and I've got an U21s coach [Neil Harris] who's Millwall through and through, so I want to build a long-term relationship with them.

"Young players at the club have to see a route through to the first team and that's the future for us. I don't want to block things up for them.

"We've got a batch at the moment who might have a chance. Fred will have a chance and I've got to have a look at the likes of O'Brien, Goodman and Marquis to see where they are.

"Hopefully I can utilise the youngsters because their attitudes are spot-on.

"Are they physically ready? If not, I'll loan them out and add to my squad but from the right age groups."

Disagree with you there, yeah marquis as been pony, but different players develop at different stages he may flourish under holloway who knows? Who would of thought when we sold lewis grabban he'd be back a few seasons later banging 22 goals?

@crackers: 19 goals in 83 games is really not bad at all if these are accurate statistics. I don't have an opinion on this so look at statistics, which aren't bad and that must be coming largely during poor recent seasons. Could it be 40 goals in 80 games with a decent team?

Surely the youth players futures are already decided, why would this affect potential signings. Is Ollie still unsure of some of the youth players? He will not see much of them during the Summer by which point he must have made a few signings already.

The one thing that gives me slight hope is that Richard Sadlier looked pony very early on but blossomed into a quality player.

Well unanimous thus far Marquis IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH - Maybe Div 2 - maybe not even that?
If he makes the "best of bunch" as would seem to be the case - the rest must be poor
I hope IH's words are not being driven out of a dawning that we just cannot improve our playing staff enough by acquisitions as we will not spend and that he now has to resort to the youth. As previous comments - surprised that they don't just know whether or not these youngsters are good enough - it is their job to know.
We do need to invest in some new faces - especially in the known about key positions.
These sort of comments from IH do worry me.

Just think marquis has had three years to show and he ain't done it so considering others got moved on in that time that didn't do it don't get why he has been offered a new deal

Strange as I say other kids behind him are being pushed back while marquis is around the first team squad

@Millwall1979: The reason Marquis was given another deal was because he offers something different, can hold the ball up well and get his head on the ball, once the ball is at his feet he brings others into play.... I know everyone wants to see the exciting quick players running at defenders but you need variety!

This is what I think people don't understand, all strikers offer different things, some have pace while some have strength.... both do different jobs and sometimes it's not about you scoring but the others around you!

Just look at The Hoff who done his job superbly, set up goals even when he didn't touch the ball because he drew defenders away with his height and strength!

Not sure about the bad views on Marquis.
He's not one for running at defenders, but he does a good job of holding the ball up to bring others into play. Unfortunately most times he's played he hasn't had players that can support this by taking advantage of it, and hasn't been given a run of games.
He didn't do a bad job on his own up front Vs. West Ham and did well to get his goal Vs. Villa.
He still deserves a chance under a new manager.

      @T-Bag: Absolutely BANG ON!!

He isn't an exciting player, just like The HOFF, but they both offer something different going forward and every team needs a player who can hold the ball up or flick balls on and Marquis is that guy.... Ok he isn't Drogba but give the boy a run of games.... and he is true Millwall!!

You can tell some who post on here are tactical geniuses, which is why I'm sure they will be wanting to become Millwall manager one day.....

Not sure Marquis has what it takes at this level. League One at best. Of course, Ollie has a good track record of improving players so we may be wrong. Does anyone else remember Sheringham as a skinny runt getting dog's abuse at the Den before Rioch had him under his wing?

@junkmale: teddy sherringham was not a favourite of George graham.who thought ted didn't have the right attitude and loaned ted out to Aldershot where he started to score goals but failed under graham to break through.it was john Docherty who saw teds potential and partnered him with bought cas.by the time rioch came along ted was an elder in the squad and our best and leading club goalscorer at that time and after us being eliminated from the playoffs against brighton home and away he was sold to forest.

Whilst I am in favour of a blend of youth and experience, we need a top dollar striker with a proven record. Youth up front is a know goer in my eyes unless he is someone like Andre Gray. Regardless of our defence, although that has vastly improved if we dont score goals the pressure will always be on the defence.

Marquis will come good. We all said this about Sheringham at the same age. He is at least as good as Easter, Jackson, Campbell and Maierhofer on the evidence of their performances last season. Give youth a chance. Get back to the days when brought on Cahill, Reid and Neil.

I cannot believe the stick some people give Marquis, yes he isn't blessed with technical ability or pace BUT he isn't in the team to do that job.....

The HOFF, wasn't a goalscorer or particularly good at anything but done a job which was to hold the ball up, bring others into play and give the team a different dimension which WORKED!

Marquis is a Millwall fan, will play his heart out and do the job which he is on the pitch to do.... everyone thinks Strikers are there to score goals, excite crowds with pace but sometimes they are there to help others score goals and play off them!!

@Bradders: we have enough strikers not scoring goals for us already so hardly need Marquis to be another.

The main role for strikers is to score goals, they can bring other qualities but we need to sign a new striker who knows how to get the ball in the goal.

I can't wait to see a bit more of Fred! At just 17, he had to confidence on the ball of a 27 year old, and as he's so young, he'll have a lot to prove, meaning he's probably gonna work his socks off. As we've seen, he has bags of pace, he can jump and he likes to take players on. I've also heard nothing but praise for O'Brien. Not too keen on Marquis though.
The only problem with all these youngsters is that they won't be as powerful as all the big blokes and they'll just get targeted and constantly pushed off the ball. I remember Fred's game against blackburn. If he had the power, he would have p***** on them, but their whole team was huge and just pushed him off. This is why Ollie needs to get some power into the squad. I heard we are linked to Chuks Aneke. I'd love to see him here.

@Lord Piggy: I agree. I completely wrote Woolford and Malone off after seeing them numerous times. It's a lot harder for a striker, under more pressure than any other player, and confidence plays a huge part. I am happy to give him time. He ain't Ian Wright but he was in his late 20's when he made it big 😉

I read a lot on here about goal scores, but nothing about play maker's. The lack of someone to deliver quality balls in the final third of the pitch, will always make it difficult for our strikers to score.

@Longfield Lion: I agree with you to a certain extent but their are still nearly 3 months to go until the August Transfer Deadline. Also quite a few players are probably on holiday at the moment so lets hope IH is biding his time to bring in the players he really wants.

    A couple of points:-
    1) Fred Onyedinma, saw him once against the anoraks and was MOTM. Haven't seen him since, how does that work !!!!

    2) Marquis the perennial promising young player. It seems like a lifetime ago he scored twice against Scunthorpe away as we chased a championship play off place! Another in the Ben May school of promising players who end up as part-timers! Even pompey who are now where they belong as a s*** fourth division club cut his loan deal short, if a bunch of scum c**** like them don't want him then .....

So assuming we don't sell anyone, what would you all say is our current strongest first 11?
Who would you change in that 11?
And who would replace them (using the youth and realistic transfers free signings)?
