Barnsley striker on Millwall's radar subject of Charlton bid

BARNSLEY striker Chris O'Grady, who is on Millwall's list of summer targets, has been the subject of a £500,000 bid from south London rivals Charlton.

O'Grady will now discuss personal terms with the Addicks after their offer was accepted.

The 28-year-old, who scored 14 goals for the Tykes despite their relegation to League One, has been on the Lions' radar since the end of the season.

Manager Ian Holloway wants a powerful goalscorer to lead the line next campaign and had earmarked O'Grady as a possible signing.

But it looks unlikely that Millwall will match Charlton's offer for the forward.

Yes , that's typical ! We stay with the group of relegation fighters, while other low teams buy seemingly good players. Dare we say it? Same ole Millwall !

£500K on a run-of-the-mill striker in the Championship is way too much in my opinion. There is better value for money out there for £500K.

Yeah, been around a long while, club to club, done very little for anyone to justify paying half a million on. I'm with millwall ( not BUSHWACKER ) on this one, let charlton pay it, we can't afford him.

If we're gonna pay 500k go for chris wood he won't get a look in in the prem and Leicester will be buying big to stay up. Get in quick who knows that might accept or preferably a top striker Adam le fondre unrealistic but I've been a fan of his since hes been at Rotherham and we missed out then maybe a mil will get him.

@dpendet: sounds like a great player he's only 76 and has a goals to games ratio of 0.0000000001:5089 what a player unfortunately wolves, rotheram and charlton are in a three horse race to get to him first

Wonder how much Barnsley would want to tempt Dale Jennings away? Doubt he'd come to us but would be a great signing if he fancied it.

I for one won't be disappointed if O'Grady goes to Charlton, much better out there IMO for less money. My only concern is the fact teams who finished around us last season are able to 'out-spend' us? The only thing I can come up with is that Charlton are trying to make any early statement in the transfer window and we are taking a more 'reserved' approach to things?

I trust Holloway to do the right thing for the club this season and wouldn't be surprised if the club have someone else in place who we are going to get and we're just trying to unsettle Charlton's plans.

No need to panic at this stage but it's ESSENTIAL we get a decent strikeforce in,it will go a long way to shaping our destiny,Easter and Marquis are not starters in this division!

Holloway and/or our Board either think 500k is too much for this fella or we don't have 500k to spend? If it's the latter then we shouldn't expect any stand out signings this summer. I hope we aren't being outbid here!

@lion.ie: can't say how much we have, but with some higher earners gone and à promise of similar budget, I would imagine we could afford £500k but that would be most of the budget gone.

It's a thankless task selecting and landing strikers.

For the manager it gets like russian roulette with more bullets than blanks

Most of KJ's were disappointing - then we got Wood. KJ also got Morison scoring.

Then they left us when they did well.

but did we thank KJ for finding them? -

no - we remember all the ones that didn't work. (too many to list here)

    Factors seem to be:

    be a 'Millwall' type player
settle in well without wanting to 'go back to wherever they originally came from'
    fit into the current formation
be thick skinned (one of our lot or more will shout that they're rubbish if they don't score from day one)
find a partner (Sheringham and Cas, Harris and Sadlier etc)
have a bit of luck (don't break or damage anything crucial)
    respond to decent coaching
get decent support: service from midfield (with goals coming from there as well) and from fast wingers who can cross

Almost forget - score 20 goals.

    How difficult is that? 😉

500k is a big transfer fee for a striker from a relegated club..

That could be used bump up a proper strikers wages almost an extra 10k a week if we get a decent one on a free?? Surely there will be a few that won't make the 25 man squads in the Prem? Maybe another Kane?? A few new managers also changing squads up there also...

Let's hope it's not all waffle and there are some decent targets

This is probably only the first of loads of such 'rumours' that are going to be put about while Ollie & Co do a bit of fishing ! I reckon he has already set his sight's and all this speculation will hopefully deflect attention away from his real target(s)......Just me guessing !

81 goals in 344 aged 28 @ 500k? No not for me thank you very much, surely not the sort of player that was discussed in our 3 day AGM in which IH outlined his blueprint for the future?

As mentioned by Kitch its bloody hard getting a striker with the competition so fierce, I am sure we were close to Ricky Lambert, Charlie Austin in recent times before they made it big,
same with Wood too in a roundabout sort of way. Its fine margins that either pay off or don't work at all. David Nugent was on his a*** and Leicester took the gamble and it paid off, Lewis Grabban was a right off, somehow he is hot property. We need to either take a punt with a player of Morisons stature when we signed him or look in house and persevere with a youth talent such as we did with Richard Sadlier (who looked pants in the early days).
