Millwall join Ipswich and Leeds in hunt for Yeovil defender

MILLWALL are set to hold talks with Byron Webster after he quit Yeovil.

NewsAtDen understands that Webster will discuss a move to The Den upon Ian Holloway's return from holiday next week.

Ipswich Town and Leeds United have also expressed an interest in the centre back, who has been on the Lions' radar for over a month.

On Tuesday, it was confirmed that Webster had rejected the offer of a new contract from the Glovers following their relegation to League One.

And now the 27-year-old will hope to secure a contract with Millwall during his meeting with Holloway.

However, chief executive Andy Ambler has warned that the club will not be rushing into any agreements with transfer targets.

"I don't see us making any signings over the next couple of weeks," Ambler said.

"We're lining up options for the manager but they won't become deals until Ollie is certain that he has found the right type of player.

"The manager has to watch all of these players and go through the analysis that we have been putting together before deciding which ones he wants to prioritise.

"We aren't going to be making decisions that quickly. It will probably be two or three weeks before anything is signed.

"We're researching all of our targets – finding out what kind of person they are, what they might cost and what fees, if any, are attached.

"If these players are out of contract, we'll be meeting with them in due course but we are in the process of weighing up our options.

"Ollie is having a break but when he gets back he'll start lining up some deals."

Webster made 85 appearances for Yeovil during a two-year stay at Huish Park but has opted to move on in search of Championship football.

He is regarded as a ball-playing centre back with an eye for goal, having scored eight times for Gary Johnson's side.

Meanwhile, Ambler is hopeful that Millwall will soon conclude contract talks with Lee Martin and David Forde.

"I'm hoping that we can sort these things out by the end of the week," he said.

Negotiations with Martin could hinge on the length of terms on the table, while Forde has met with Ambler for a second round of talks.

Ambler has also confirmed that Holloway's budget for next season has been pegged at last year's levels.

He said: "Is the chairman prepared to spend the same again? Yes, he is."

    Two things for me here.
One, The budget hasn't been increased but Ambler words it differently.
Two, I can't imagine that Ollie hasn't seen Webster play.

@colin66: According to this site, his characteristics are:
      Passing – Weak
      Concentration – Weak
      Discipline – Weak
      Tackling – Strong
      Commits fouls – Often
      Red cards – 2
      Yellow cards – 7
Likes to pass long balls – Often

Is this really someone we need?

@colin66: It doesn't look great from that report. He likes playing the long ball often, prone to a red card or 2, weak passing. Qualities our centre backs have in abundance.

@colin66: yeah but sky sports also said lowry is weak in tackling. we all know that's not true. I remember him playing against us on the first game of the season and I thought he was very good. (yes I know 1 game against a team with as s*** attack as us isn't enough but I was really impressed).
however some players I think we really should look at are george elokobi, recently released by wolves, and britt assombalonga from Peterborough. Wolves fans loved elokobi because he always gave 100% and I know holloway said he doesn't want to strengthen the full back position which I think is stupid cos we only have malone and 35 year old edwards now that dunne's proved himself at CB. also, jackett and holloway are good friends so he can just ask KJ about him. Also, britt assombalonga scored 24 goals in the league for peterborough last season I believe, he is 21 years old i think and he's got pace. fits the exact description that holloway was looking for doesn't it?

We've missed a lot of goals this year from set pieces - haven't scored a header from a corner all season. An aerial threat at a corner is imperative otherwise you may as well just kick it out for a goal kick. Not only that, he isn't some washed up 32 year old - he has time on his side and he seems desperate to prove himself in the championship. Will almost certainly be cheap. Would be a good signing in my opinion.

Thats some feat, being a CH and scoring 8 goals for a relegated team. If he had been here this season he would have been our joint top scorer.

Don't know much about him but seems like he may be a steady Championship player. At 6'5 a good aerial presence at the back and if he could chip in with a goal or two then at the age of 27 could turn out to be a decent signing.

At 27, he is a young defender and at 6'5 he should be scoring a few headers!!

The guy likes playing football, ball on the deck and clearly likes putting himself about after 8 goals over 2 seasons with Yeovil.... just a shame Beevers can't score a few more as he is only an inch shorter than Webster.

Could this be the end for Paul Robinson or Danny Shittu?

@Bradders: Bit surprised to see Shittu getting some stick - I thought he improved since IH took over - still calm under pressure and frightening for strikers and also - actually started passing the ball rather than hoofing...? Did I imagine that?!?
The only problem I DO see with both Shittu, and Robbo though - is how long are they going to last...? Future replacements must be found for that reason.
Webster looks good - he'll no doubt be chatting with Upson about what its like here....
p.s. Enjoy your holiday Ollie - you deserve it!

After next season though, it's time to say goodbye.

@Bradders: We do not need an immobile tub of lard in our defence. Might be ok if we were in the conference but he wasn't fit at the beginning of the season, was hugely overweight and is incapable of any positional sense whatsoever. I'd say it was time to say cheerio.

Key points are that we are only approaching out-of-contract players, discussions on hold till Ollie gets back and JB is still spending on players. Generally I think this is sensible all round. JB once again proves his commitment with financial investment, if you can call giving money away investment?

@jim1222: Woods was offered £25,000 a week at Leicester..... he was also given "perks", as well as the chance to play in the premiership which is why he took that over Millwall.... We made him a generous offer, in fact would have seen him be our highest paid player but still wasn't the same amount as what Leicester offered.

I don't know too much about this kid so i cant really comment. But at 6'5 right sided CB alongside 6'4 left sided CB in Beevers, that's some aerial presence.......

Also, leaving it a few weeks before we make a decision leaves the door wide open for other clubs to nip in before us......risky strategy.

Players will dip in form throughout a season when others shine, it's football and that's why we need 4 CB's including Webster, Beevers, Dunne and either Shittu or Robbo (Shittu preferred).

Just his dressing room gee up seems to have got him his place in the side towards the end of the season IMO.

@Barnlion: I agree. I don't think Dunne is the answer at CB or RB. He will have a stint in side for a period of games cos of injury or suspension and it will be hailed as the prodigal son returns and all that, like always. Then he will f**k up or be sent off and then be out the side again because of a loan player or a 35yr old winger is seen a better option. That's what its been like for him for the last 2/3 seasons. He is what was needed at the end of the season as it was a dog fight, but IF we want to progress then the likes of Dunne will become squad players at best....that's a fact, no ways round it.

@82wall: 82 you must be satisfied with the mundane, or am I missing something here regarding Alan Dunne, I may be wrong but I am sure that no other club has ever made any enquiry about signing him from Millwall. But then they may as clueless as me!!!!

@Barnlion: Well, we all know that Ollie likes Shittu to run the Team , ( which will happen this coming season, DS , is on his last year of fitness at Championship ) this New player will fit in the Back -Four . Loyalty as far as Alan Dunne is concerned has to be put to one side - Team Millwall MUST COME FIRST ! ( so maybe Robbo and Dunne will move as required, sad as it sounds to many.

I see he was with Leeds youth aged 12-15 - he is from Yorkshire so he might want to go back home

I love that part - He said: "Is the chairman prepared to spend the same again? Yes, he is." JB said last season was our biggest budget since he has been at the club but it was unfortunately squandered. Now with the club getting it's fingers burnt and learning from its mistakes, under Olly with a sizable budget we could really be able to compete for a spot in the top half of table, that will do nicely.

@Bexley_Lion: top half of the table, wouldn't that be nice.

Got to believe Ollie would be better placed to spend the money that Lomas was given last season.

The strikers he brings in are my main concern.

Hurry up on your holiday Ollie.
He only had half a season he don't need a long holiday yet.
He sat on his ar5e from October to January and looking at last season he didn't officially start until the middle of march.

We do need a new CB, winger and 2 strikers. He looks like one option, but if other clubs are also looking then at best we are 20% likely to get him. I hope we don't sign Morison, hope we do get Martin and Forde and find a couple of real gems from lower leagues.

Few people talking absolute b***** about dunne on here saying he's not a Cb, not good enough etc. obviously he can play cb and did well enough there for those last games to keep us up so there's nothing else to say about it. Of course we need backup now that too I and shuttu are probably over the hill, which is why we are looking at this Byron geeez I imagine.

@benzo: From afar, it amazes me re the difference in outlook on here re a player who has played eight games for us and his role in keeping us up and a player who has Millwall running through his blood and his role in keeping us up. Sometimes the answer to the biggest problems are right under your nose and Dunne wouldn't be the first full back at Millwall to belatedly find his niche at centre half. Surely he deserves to be cut some slack by the doubters and given the same chance as Edwards? Maybe Holloway has stumbled upon a balanced back four that perfectly suits 'his way' of playing and which could be the basis of a much more comfortable 2014/15?

I find some of the comments on here absolutely ridiculous. First of all, we have one first choice centre half - Beevers and at the moment Dunne (Millwall through and through, was epic the last 2 months of the season but ultimately won't be first choice this season), Robbo (again Wall through and through but it pains me to say, just isn't good enough for the Championship) and Shittu (a beast but won't last a whole season) this guy is of a good age for a defender, would appear to big a presence at 6 ft 5 and chips in with a few goals - I'd snap him up before someone else does. Also people slagging off Alan Dunne, he may not be the best player we have but he loves Millwall, he knows what it takes to be a Millwall player and without him, we'd be a League 1 club now.

Secondly, Holloway wants to strengthen the squad in all areas - IT WILL HAPPEN - yet we get everyday day on here and other websites/social networking websites people asking for transfer rumours and gossip and want us to sign every single player who is released/available and it really winds me up! I saw one guy somewhere claim we should be signing players like Marc Albrighton!!! We are Millwall, we don't spend big money on players or sign big name players but we work with what we can and I truly believe Holloway will bring in some real gems (in his own time) and turn us into a half decent side (mid table would be good enough for me).

Finally, I still see people mention Chris Wood (yes Wood not Woods!!!) that scenario will never happen again with us, we will never bid £1million on a player nor the reported amount on wages on one player unless we get taken over by some Sheik from Dubai (which I would never want to happen) can we move on from him and that deal, it won't happen again.

@Millwall1979: I,l probably get a slap for this as well but I admire dunne, he,s a battler and when push came to shove, he gave everything to the club he loves. I hope Ollie looks at every bloke in the squad and judges them on every aspect . You,d think with the right blend we can kick some serious a*** next season. I'm confident, I can't wait!!

    RIP Lee Rigby.

    As far as Webster goes,
Why would any player want to sign for Leeds at the moment?
Players don't get paid at Bellend Rd, do they?,
He looks a decent player, and we need another twizzle to replace the Austrian twizzle
At corners........you know, one that can score goals with his head,
Otherwise what's the point of being a twizzle?

Just putting it out there: are there any proper research findings in a positive correlation between percentage of inked up entire arms and ego? If so, should we base our search for genuine and trouble-free future talent on an arm inked up scale?
