Ipswich loanee Edwards "puzzled" by Millwall's predicament

CARLOS Edwards is mystified by Millwall's lowly league position but insists the Lions can pick up the points they need to stay in the Championship.

Edwards played 83 minutes on his debut against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday after moving to The Den from Ipswich Town for the remainder of the season.

The 35-year-old admits the prospect of playing regularly was the motivating factor behind his switch to SE16, but he is determined to help Ian Holloway's side beat the drop.

He said: "I haven't come here just because I want to play – of course that is important – but it's a challenge.

"As I said to the manager last week, I am looking through the squad here and I'm wondering to myself 'why?' – that's the big question – because of the quality we have.

"It puzzles me when I look around and see the quality of players that we have got at our disposal and yet still we are bottom of the table.

"But there's hope once you believe and the lads believe in themselves that we can do it.

"I'm relishing the challenge because there's no way Millwall should be at the bottom of the Championship with the manager and the quality of players that we have."

Edwards has experienced a relegation battle before in his career, having helped Sunderland secure Premier League safety in 2008-09.

"It's a habit for me but they are two different ballgames," he added.

"At Sunderland, we weren't rock-bottom but we were looking down the gun barrel in the same way and we dug deep.

"When you look around and see the players next to you, you ask yourself 'why are we in this situation, and why aren't we pulling our fingers out?'

"The lads looked at themselves in the mirror, a few harsh words were said but they took them on the chin – constructive criticism really – and we survived that year.

"It is possible that the same could happen here – nothing is impossible.

"The lads here know each other to a tee, so we need to put our arms around each other and realise that these next seven games are crucial.

"The next two games being away from home might take a bit of pressure off of the lads, so who knows, we could be coming back down the road smiling with six points."

Josh King's stoppage-time equaliser denied Millwall all three points against Blackburn.

"It was two points dropped," Edwards added. "The lads gave a good account of themselves but we need to capitalise on our home games at this stage of the season.

"It's very important that we take all three points at home. We disappointed ourselves and the fans by dropping those two points."

It is also to do with too many players being taken on who cant get in the first team's at there parent clubs, and come down here for a last big payday, and I am sure that is what you are doing at Millwall.
Look at Saturday's game the ref could have been a Millwall season ticket holder and we still cant hang on for 3 points.
The middle was a joke that Owen Garvan did not complete one pass, and Ollie is there a problem with his mobility, because he just can not run, he just Trotts a bit like the Bolton loanee does. the sooner Olliee smells the coffee and admits at least to himself we looked doomed and starts looking too next season and gets rid of these wage thieves now.

@Barnlion: Liam Trotter is a better player by far, his decisive passing could slide defences in two plus he had the knck of scoring a few spectacular goals. We have not been the same since he left. Bring him back!

@Peckhamlad: I think that we were not playing particually well when Liam Trotter was still here, and he does not seem to be setting the world alight at Bolton either, as he does not even get into the starting eleven.
But I am sure that even the Liam Trotter you elude too would not be able to breath life into this team now.

I'm puzzled that you can be allowed to earn a fortune by playing a game of football with a half-arsed attitude.

What's missing in my opinion is team spirit.
Too many loans and too highly paid compared to the rest of the squad.
Those big wage differences will be accepted more by lesser paid players if the results go well.
If they dont then I think they look around and become divided and probably despise them a bit.
    My opinion anyway.

@wall2wall: Yeah agree with that - don't know how much animosity there is between players on the subject of wages...could be some.
But just the fact we've got so many loans is a serious issue. We need players who are in it for the long haul at millwall... Loans should be brought in to compliment the core of a squad- not to make up half of our starting 11.... They're not gona put their bodies on the line, coz they won't be here next season and they'll find it harder to work as a team coz we're a bunch of individuals.... Once again though- it goes back to being plagued by injury...
If Ollie somehow turns this around, it'll be nothing short of a miracle.... Or it'll be because Charlton are beyond sh*t... hope this will be the case! COYL.

I think the explanation is clear, players are unfit and lacked leadership, which Holloway has only just been able to impliment on the last two months. Time to let the loanees that are not performing go back to their parent clubs and bring in players that are committed to Millwall.

Have a f****** good clearout at the end of the season to prepare for League 1. Get rid of the loan, short term and out of contract players including Forde who obviously isn't interested in signing a new contract. Bring in young players who are released from Premiership clubs who will have a point to prove and use them with our up and coming youngsters like Goodman, Fred and Pavey. It might take them a bit of time to gel but play the same eleven each week barring injuries and suspensions AND STICK TO THE SAME FORMATION!!!

I like the way he say's we could be coming back down the road smiling with six points." Is he having a laugh we can't go longer then 10min's without conceding a goal. If u score in the 88th minute and take the lead surely u should stick every C**T behind the ball and FU****G defend 4 ur life's. Lets be honest palace kept us up last year. This S**T should of been sorted. KJ knew what was happening and got out at the right time. IMO we need 2 win 7 out of 7 2 stay up and i can't see that happening. we've only managed 7wins all season. Let's face it L1 nxt season... 🙁

@JordieLion: your right about jacket left us with some sh** players on nice contracts, what i find a bit annoying is he took henry with him,but not shittu or dunne who he gave nice contracts to,funny that, now before all the people who think jacket is a legend have a go at me,let me say i was never ever a fan of jacket and at the end of the day he did walk away leaving us a team i bet he did not want to manage this season.

Ambler gave Shittu the contract but KJ left us with a mess too - how Smith stayed is beyond me. Something I cannot believe happened. Ambler also had involvement with Hoyte too didn't he?

@MFC Lion: read what i said i was never a fan of jacket, but you or no one heard me s*** him off whilst he was at the club.
so no it was not because he did not get us top flight football.
i only had a pop at him because of the way he walked away and leaving us with a sh*t squad,so untill he did that i never said a word, but if you want blind faith in the man good for you .
lots of you think him a legend that great but i dont.

Its quite simple Carlos, we have wasted another wage on a 35 year old winger/right back when we should have got a central defender in!!
