Report: Leeds United 2-1 Millwall

A POOR defensive showing in the first half cost Millwall a point at Elland Road.

After a bright opening, the Lions fell behind when Matt Smith's improbable header looped over David Forde in the 19th minute.

And the visitors' back four seemed half asleep as Ross McCormack pounced on a ricochet and stabbed a shot under Forde from close range.

Substitute DJ Campbell's stunning 25-yard half-volley reduced the deficit but could not inspire the equaliser that Millwall's play between the two penalty areas deserved.

Ian Holloway made three changes to the side that drew 0-0 with Charlton as John Marquis, Scott McDonald and Mark Beevers all came into the starting XI.

Steve Morison (ineligible) and Shaun Williams (banned) were missing, while Simeon Jackson dropped to the bench. DJ Campbell returned to the squad after a hamstring injury.

McDonald was the architect of the game's first chance in the fourth minute, feeding the ball wide to Marquis but the striker's shot was blocked.

90 seconds later, Ed Upson's cross from a free kick eluded everyone in the penalty area except for goalkeeper Jack Butland, who tipped the ball around the post at the last second.

Upson then skipped past a tackle on the edge of the area and delivered a low cross into the box but Tom Lees prevented Fred Onyedinma from turning a shot home.

Millwall's good start to the game continued as McDonald exchanged passes with Onyedinma before teeing up Marquis, but the home side scrambled the ball behind for a corner.

And Leeds took the lead against the run of play in the 19th minute when Smith's powerful header from Connor Wickham's long throw dropped over Forde and into the net.

Alan Dunne produced a vital near-post interception to prevent McCormack making it 2-0 before Martyn Woolford's drive was held by Butland at the other end.

But McCormack did add a second goal for the hosts in the 41st minute when Lees' tackle on Marquis fell kindly for the Scotland international, who poked between Forde's legs.

Millwall created the first opening of the second half when McDonald's pass picked out the overlapping run of Beevers, who forced a diving save from Butland.

The Lions should have pulled a goal back in the 50th minute when Marquis teed up McDonlad, but a combination of Butland and defenders kept the Australian's shot out.

That miss prompted Holloway to use all three of his substitutions in quick succession as he brought on Campbell, Simeon Jackson and Stefan Maierhofer.

And it was two of the new introductions who combined to halve Leeds' advantage in the 73rd minute.

Maierhofer chested a long ball into the path of Campbell and the striker barely broke stride as he hammered a sweet half-volley into the top corner from the edge of the area.

Butland then denied Maierhofer from close range before Woolford and Jackson both had efforts blocked following a chaotic goal-mouth scramble.

McDonald's ambitious 30 yarder, which sailed over, was the Lions' last effort of note as Leeds held on to win 2-1.

Same every week, soft goals conceded and missed chances. Tuesday is a must win to drag birmingham into it. Yet again we have been relatively fortunate with the other results.

If we beat Birmingham on Tuesday night, we'll be within 2 points of them and pull out of the bottom three assuming that Forest, on the end of a 5-0 spanking today will take that out on Charlton and Yeovil are at Leicester.
Millwall are what they are this season. Crap. But, it's not over yet. I say it's not over yet!

this is true - two efforts on goal for Leeds - I think we are due a slice of luck - we are not bottom by ten points a few wins and we will do this - I think we are capable - the players need our support Tuesday not constant bitching - any one who considers themselves a Millwall fan should be there on Tuesday

It's not the supporters who are in question here !!.

          @southstand:

you are wrong; it is some of our supporters who are in question - take away the Charlton fans and we had about 13,500 last week - see how many make it on Tuesday

it is a massive game for us - we can all turn up when we are in the play off zone or for a big match - the true test is who turns up when it ain't easy -

many may hate WHU but when they were in the Championship most of their core support turned out every week and they were pretty mediocre for large parts of that season - arsenal ain't won anything for 7 years , smashed 6-0 today - 60,000 will turn up next week

unless you know nothing about football we are a bette team than under holoway - we don't capitulate and rarely have been outplayed =- we lack one or two match winners that we have had over the last few years - puncheon woods kane townsend - with one of those we would have won several recent matches - yes we lack that extra quality , but I think the players are competing, we just don't have enough to overcome mistakes like some teams do

@timchimes: Attendances aren't great, but to be fair the football's been pretty awful for the past few years. Even with a smallish crowd, we all know our fans give great support if we see proper commitment on the pitch. But there's only so much you can take and we really have had some passengers in the team in recent seasons.

Want this to end now, go down win a few games score a few goals and come back better in a few years.
Give most of the players a free transfer, start from scratch, with some youth players given a chance.

But if we do go down, it's quite possible that we won't bounce back straight away- 'a few years' turns into a decade and we become 1 of those clubs that 'almost made it'....
We NEED to stay up and re build the team in the championship- and the best chance we can give ourselves to do that now- is by getting as many people as possible down the den on Tuesday.

As we were then, Yeovil a point behind now and Birmingham in free fall a game we gotta win along with the other eight.
Sounded unlucky tbh but then most games this season sounded or looked unlucky.
Bring on the brum and another 3 or 4 changes no doubt.
Maybe we'll win more games next season cause we'll have a settled side in league 1.

If that clown starts with Marquis it is no wonder we do not score.

Holloway says we had ten cup finals, well truth is that we now have one cup final and it's Tuesday night. If we lose we are staring down the barrel and the gun is loaded. Respect to the lads that went and their positive spin on the performance but at 9.30 on Tuesday I don't want to be reading about yet another hard luck story.

Although there are nine games remaining it now looks like three from four, unless of course we can beat Birmingham on Tuesday, which will drag them into the mix. The only hope we have then is that we are all as bad as each other. So after another disappointing result today all is not lost, but to give ourselves a decent chance we must take advantage of the two home games, which IMO are winnable and take maximum points.

@harry cook: No Harry, Shittu is crap. We need two new centre halves plus a major weed-out. IF we stay up, JB will supply the dosh to sign new players and that will allow us to remove the players that call themselves Millwall forwards. Not in my book they aint.
IF we get relegated the above applies but with less money to spend and that will see the Millwall youth players representing Millwall. Either way, I hope lessons have been learnt by both Ollie and the board because wherever we are next season, a total overhaul is what is needed.

@NICKOLA: Losing Shittu has been a massive setback he has been magnificent at the back and a leader during recent games. The weakness is up front without a decent striker, and imo poor managerial decisions on the line.

@Peckhamlad: sorry peckham shittu has played half decent since IH arrived, before that he was a fat over wieght slow coach,i will never forgive him and some other player's on the way they played under lomas they may not have wanted to play under him,but it is us that pay their wage's and they were rubbish.
I have said it before and i will say it again 65% of goal's against us under lomas were down to school boy error's or rank bad defending and no manager can do anything about that.
IH has sorted the defense ou to a degree, but now the forward's are doing to him what the defender's did to lomas.

I'm really liking this maierhofer fella, he sorts reminds me of The type of millwall players we had in league one, not much skill but got the physicality to make games changes and CB's can't handle him. when you watch the highlights he was already in front of the Leeds CB who couldn't budge him out of position to receive long ball pass and then layed it off nicely to Campbell who should great technique to strike the ball sweetly into the back of net. I know they both 31 & 32 respectively but both are certainly good for one season deals next season and if that's in league one well we be even better prepared to bounce straight back up with those two in the squad.

answer to harry cook you might not say a bad word about shittu ,but i will and so do a lot of other's that i know and so do a lot of poster's
on this site.shittu came back from last year grossly over weight and totally unfit {what was he eating in the close season] he was a disgrace ,ever asked yourself why he was dropped for six games, maybe it was because he could not run, could not or would not jump to head a ball and when he did the ball was going upwards more often than not ,yes since holloway has been here he has improved his fitness and his game, but that dont take away the the fact that prior to hollway he and a number of others were a disgrace to this club, but hold on lets just keep blaming lomas and make him the scapegoat when in fact the player's under lomas were more to blame than lomas.
I know lomas had a lot of failings but even holloway said the player's did't help lomas.
so harry if he is your idea of true millwal is shittu, along with a few other's he ain't mine.
who is going to be the next scapegoat IH maybe well he wont be mine i will support him as i did jacket [who was'nt my cup of tea ] and as i did lomas who i admit had failing's] but what i wont put up with is rank bad professionalism as shown by shittu and a number of other's under lomas.

Two things i wont do 1 big people up when they dont deserve it 2 make scapegoats of people, its easy to lay the blame at lomas's door, but the predicament we are in is not one man's fault ,it's many peoples fault board member's,manager's past and present, and some of us fan's also some player's.
