Austrian striker trains with Millwall ahead of Charlton clash

GIANT striker Stefan Maierhofer trained with Millwall on Thursday.

The 6ft8in former Austrian international, who has been without a club since leaving German side FC Köln last summer, took part in the Lions' first session since defeat to Blackpool.

Boss Ian Holloway wants to sign a tall targetman before this weekend's local derby against Charlton, with Steve Morison a doubt for the game with a neck injury.

And 31-year-old Maierhofer could fit the bill, although it is unclear whether a deal is likely.

The ex-Bayern Munich youngster has not played a competitive fixture since the end of last season, so Holloway may be concerned about his lack of match fitness.

Maierhofer played in the Premier League for Wolves in the 2009-10 season after a £1.8m-move from Rapid Vienna, but he left Molineux the following year.

@Longfield Lion: Comments from Ollie. Like I will play the youth are a joke ,we don't need this unfit has been we have tall youth players that are fitter than this mug give them a chance cause if we go down we will be relying on them give Jake a go he can score a goal even if he is a Center half and is 6ft 4 We don't need to waste any more money on unfit players COYL

@bermlion: How fit is a pro player going to be if he has not played since last season and he has not even got a club where he would be training even if not playing, We are officially a joke now if he thinks this guy will help us another wage thief. JB ought to have a word in Ollies shell like a.s.a.p.

We have had some planks and it looks like Ollie wants to add to the list.

@Alan.F: this page needs to be taken of this site and put into the history section of the club, this could be 1 of the defining moments in the turnaround of millwall. Not because of the 6ft8 giant man but because of the amusement factor associated with all you're comments. We,l win and always be winners but f*** it's great to have a laugh. Thank you.

This geezer is totally unfit, unsuitable & uninspiring. What a crock of s***! Plays, gets injured coz he's unfit, unavailable for selection until the end of the season after sustaining a hamstring injury or suchlike & then after thieving a living for several weeks Millwall end up relegated. Begs the question why?

Ok, since the Blackpool game we here strikers injured, no target man up front, fair enough. Chairman says he will back and supply cash for what we need. So we bring Marquis back and now we are informed this guy. With respect to both and with the biggest game of the season coming up, we need someone fit, playing and currently scoring goals. (If this money is being made available, as we are lead to believe)

This situation would be really funny if it was not actually happening. Marquis has been bought back from Northampton, where he hasn't managed to score against league two defenders and then we bring in the jolly green giant who hasn't played at all this season. We want someone who can join the team and hit the ground running, preferably not in a bathchair. By the time this bloke is match fit the season will be over and we will be in league one. The only thing I could think of to do with him, is stand him on the penalty spot and tell him not to move, (not that that seems possible), and float in high balls and hope that he knows how to head a ball down. Mind you if they do that and he scores who gives a s**t, but cant really see that happening.

Does it matter if he is any good? All we need him to do is run around a bit taking all the Charlton defenders with him which will leave the door open for the rest of the team. A 6ft 8in striker is useful whether he can play or not purely as a magnet for their defenders.

What an unbelievable thread! Millwall "steer clear of foreign players!"

Tim Cahill, Lucas Neill, Jimmy Abdou, Kevin Muscat, Tony Warner, Richard Sadlier, Christophe Kinet,
Shane Lowry, Danny Shittu off the top of my head

As for Bob Peeters he was never given a chance by most fans just had the misfortune to stand out physically which is always a crime with our lot. Imagine if Crouch had pitched up at Millwall no way his bird would ever have won Strictly 🙂

How can we seriously be even thinking about playing him ? He hasn't played a competitive game since LAST season. He'll pull his hamstring putting his kit on ffs. Ok, he's as tall as the Matterhorn but probably about as agile.
I now think that Ollie and the board are doing drugs. I really do.

We do not need a recalled striker who struggles in League Two or a unfit,no one wants striker.

For weeks people hav been complaining me included about the lack of height up front. So Ollie. Does wot we want & people r still moaning. At this time of the season all clubs need their players. I would like to see both morro & the mountain up front maybe then we mite see the best of morro

Don't get me wrong. I genuinely do want to see this guy play. We are really at rock bottom with the three midgets up front, it's no wonder Morro has a sore neck!

What you say is true too - the mountain with morro upfront could be the best shout of all - remember, at norwich Morrow played alongside Holt who is a similar lump, and they scored a sh*t tonne of goals between them.

Of course if this bloke heads in a last minute winner Tommorrow against the Anoraks we'll all be calling his signing a master stroke !

I agree with most of the comments on this thread and signing him would be a joke. IH is scraping the bottom of the barrel because being realistic at this stage of the season who is likely to be available who would fit the bill? Yeovil signed Miller recently so we missed out on him. Have Holloway and Harford used their contacts to see if there are any youngsters in the Premiership Academies banging in the goals who would relish the opportunity to join a Championship club on loan?
