Millwall debutant Onyedinma has "bright future" – Holloway

IAN Holloway believes that 17-year-old Fred Onyedinma has a promising career ahead of him after handing the midfielder his league debut.

Onyedinma, who made his full senior bow in January as a substitute in the FA Cup defeat at Southend, came off the bench against Blackpool last night.

And Holloway intends to give the Lions' academy product more first-team minutes – albeit preferably after the club has secured its Championship status.

"I feel for the boy because nobody wants to come on in a big game and end up losing," he said. "We couldn't seem to get him on the ball but that was the state of the game.

"He has got a bright future I think and hopefully we will have a decent league to blood him in, which is this one."

Holloway spent over half an hour with his players in the dressing room after the full-time whistle at Bloomfield Road but insisted he had not given them the hairdryer treatment.

He said: "Why would I tear into them? Some of our play was as good as it has ever been. We cut them apart at times.

"I could not have asked us to start the game any better than we did. We could have been 1-0 up after two minutes. Their goalie has made a brilliant save from the penalty as well.

"We had a chance when Martyn Woolford was played through but you have got to put a message on the ball – take your time, have a touch, and on another day he'd have scored."

I'm glad at least Ollie is confident of securing our Championship status. Maybe Onyedinma and some of the other youngsters should be thrown in more often, maybe they can show our players where the goal is.

Onyedinma has "bright future" - he'll probably leave in the summer!
Can't wait for this s*** season to be over. Ollie is turning things around and getting us playing better football, but in my view not quickly enough, just doesn't have the tools to do it.
It's also getting very predictable as well. The first 45 min's we're playing a high tempo game, then filter out in the 2nd half. Teams will see this and know all they need to do is suck up the pressure in the 1st half and hit us on the counter.
Once we went a goal down last night, I knew the only way we'd get back into the game was scoring in the 1st half and going in all square at half time.
With the way things are going and looking at the League table, wouldn't be surprised if we're bottom of the league come Saturday night.
If you can't score goals, how the f*** do you win games.
    Bring on the world cup!!

Then give them the Hairdryer Treatment when they FAIL again and again and again etc.

Good to see a youngster getting his chance, bug as soon as we went 1-0 down, with our strike force we were never going to get a result, the last timd we scored 2 goals in a game was 14th December losing at Blackburn. My optimism for staying up is starting to decline, if we don't get 3 points against the Anoraks I think that will be it. I hope they put in a great performance to prove me wrong.

Fred didn't look out of place in this Division, he was definitely a bright spot in the second half at Broofield Rd. I still can't understand why we took 15 minutes to work out that Jackson wasn't going to win aerial balls when he came on. The switch the three CB's works though and our possession afer that was good, but we didn't take our chances.

@glyngo: on the subject of Jackson, totally agree. with players like Jackson and McDonald - the game plan has to change... Balls in the air don't work with these guys (don't know how many times I've said it this season!) they need through balls, on the ground, that they can run onto and split defenses. p.s. Anyone got any thoughts on how Bessone played?

@Luke ColdBlow10: I missed the first half due t traffic on the M6, but second half he started a bit dodgy, sending the ball long to no ttarget, but settled and played quite well. technically sound with a good first touch and more physical than Malone, and defintiely a bette defender. He provides a different options to Malone's attcaking instincts.

Fred lives near me and I know a lot of people that he's mates with... Great player with a great attitude unlike some youngsters we've had, he works hard and is the sort of youth we need! Maybe we need to be switching about the line up cos the current clearly aint going much for us

Does anyone know how many are on loan to us....just thinking how many will p.ss off and so don't give a monkeys now.One thing we have achieved is to defy the law of averages, looking at our score sheet. Got to say that i don't feel like hammering Ollie at this time, i've turned a bit for the time being and if one goal had gone in instead of woodwork it could have been different story. Said when Lomas was here, that it's the players that cross the line not the manager.................all the hard work and money getting up to this divi and now just throwing it away..............oh well thats off me chest...................and for all you lot that go to all away games you deserve more than this,it must be fukcing sad coming back watching it all.

@DELBOY64: It's fine to suggest blooding youngsters that have come through the ranks. Certainly, they'll have more of a Millwall heart than some of the players that are currently taking the money at Millwall. That said, a relegation dog fight is no place for players with little or no experience. In an ideal world, whn you're safe with a few games to go, not going up or down, that's the time to blood them. Fred was on the bench and got on because Bailey is unfit, Wright and Smith are no longer in the plans. No harm in 15 minutes here and there but we can't promote the youth team en-bloc. Time for them will come especially as most of our first team players will be on their toes as soon as League one becomes a certainty.

Read tonight Burnley have handed a trial to a 22 year old striker who has scored 30 goals for Dulwich Hamlet this season. Am I the only person amazed that this is happening under our noses?

@Adsy77777: No, you aren't. Our scouting system has been and is absolute excrement. There's a player from Folkestone Invicta that's also attracting attention from a multitude of clubs. Unfortunately, Millwall aren't one of them. Still, we've always got Marquis.

Just can't believe you lot moaning about Holloway and slagging him off. No other manager can turn this team around overnight and get promoted! What ever happens. I and there's loads out there that will back him to turn it around and come good however long it takes. If any of you are unfortunate to sit next to me and s*** him off, don't be surprised if you blacked out! I can't stand people that blows with the wind so shut up and stay away or support the man and this poor team he inherited. So what if players he brought in are not up to it. He's trying to do something more than the previous one you all wanted out. Remember the team now only concede a goal per game. That's a chance these players got to make the best of and score first and who knows maybe a second and winning goal will come along and you will all forgot the slagging off of Holloway!

@Jim28: Yeah I don't doubt they are trying Jim. I personally don't think the strikers we've brought in suit the way we've been playing. I'd rather us had signed one quality striker (like Huddersfield with Nahki Wells) than bring in a load of loans. What I'd give for a Cascarino or Sheringham in the team now!
